You will visit Italy, Switzerland and France during this Best of the Alps itinerary. Hike the most famous and spectacular European trekking route, the Tour of Mont Blanc, alpine loop around the highest mountain in Europe.
Level: Advanced. Walking time: 6 to 8 hours daily with personal backpack. Total climbing: 8340 mts / 27360 ft. Maximum climbing in one day: 1950 mts / 6400 ft. Accommodations: Budget (camping, B&B or huts).
Dates: July 19-26, 2009.
Day 1: Courmayeur (Italy) - meet at Malpensa airport in Milan (Italy). Van transfer to Courmayeur (Vale d’Aosta/Italy). Overnight in Courmayeur (1228 m).
Day 2: Courmayeur (Italy) - Bonatti hut (Italy) - first day of hiking and first contact with the beautiful glaciar valleys of the Mont Blanc. Overnight at Refuge Bonatti (2020 m). Hot shower available. Hiking time - aprox. 7 h. Climbing - 1550 m.
Day 3: Bonatti (Italy) - Champex (CH). Hike up to the Elena mountain hut (2000 m). Bus transfer from La Foulie to Champex, in Switzerland. Overnight in Relais de Arpette (1627 m). Hiking time - aprox. 9h30; climbing - 1390 m.
Day 4: Champex (CH) - Col de Balme (France) - another great day of hiking. Our final destination is the Col de Balme mountain hut (2191 m), where Alexander Dumas stay in 1836, on his way to Switzerland. Overnight in Refuge Col de Balme (France). Hiking time - aprox. 9h; climbing - 1950 m.
Day 5: Col de Balme - Les Contamines(France). Bus transfer from Argentiere to Les Houches, through the beautiful Chamonix valley. We will stop in Chamonix to rest and do some shopping. Overnight in Contamines (1164 m). Hiking time - aprox. 5h; climbing - 600 m.
Day 6: Les Contamines (France) - Les Mottets (France) - today we will do several mountain passes, in the company of wild marmots. Lodging - Challet des Mottets (1978 m). Hiking time - aprox. 8h; climbing - 1550 m.
Day 7: Les Mottets (France) - Courmayeur (Italy) - we go back to Italy, hiking through the Val Ferret valley. From the trail we can admire the breathtaking sight of Mont Blanc´s peak. As an option we can take the ski lift down. Overnight in Courmayeur (1228 m). Hiking time - aprox. 8h; climbing - 1300 m.
Day 8: Trip back home. Van transfer to Malpenza airport in Milan. Flight back home.
