Suspended bridges, villages and monasteries in mountain settings and high altitudes together with unique landscapes of the worlds highest mountain range. Unveil the Indian Himalayas ancient kingdoms of Zanskar and Ladakh, in close contact with the Buddhist culture.

Level: Advanced. Walking time: 6 to 8 hours daily with personal backpack, in altitude.
Accommodations: Budget (camping, B&B or huts).

Dates: August 15-30, 2009.

Tour Itinerary:

Day 1: Travel to New Delhi (India). Flight to New Delhi (not included).

Day 2: New Delhi to the Himalayas. Meeting at the New Delhi airport in the morning. Transfer to the Domestic Airport Terminal. Flight to Kullu. Transfer from Kullu airport to Manali (30 km). Check in hotel. Free afternoon to rest or visit Manali(2050 meters).

Day 3: Manali-Darcha (4x4). We will travel 140 km in a 4x4 to Darcha (3360meters). The trip will include a stop at Rohtang pass (3950 meters), 51km outside Manali. From this pass we can enjoy a wide panoramic view with mountains rising far above the clouds. A breathtaking site! Arrive in Darcha late evening. Overnight camping.

Day 4: Darcha – Chalang Tokpo (trekking). First day of trekking to reach Chalang Tokpo or Palamo (3580meters). The trekking will take 5-6 hours and will cover about 12 km. This is a comfortable 5 hour hike, starting early and camping at 3 pm with time to enjoy and acclimatize. The trek passes through the villages of Chikka and Rarig, before crossing the bridge to Palamo. Overnight camping.

Day 5: Chalang Tokpo - Zanskar Sumdo - Ramjak (trekking). Trekking of approx. 16 Km to Ramjak (3750meters) passing by Zanskar Sumdo (3910meters). This trekking will include crossing a river by a rope trolley just before the campsite. Total trekking time is approx. 7-8 hours. Overnight camping.

Day 6: Ramjak - Chumik Nakpo (trekking). Trekking to reach Chumik Nakpo (4060meters), covering approx. 14 kms in about 5-6 hours. The trekking starts with a steep climb after the campsite that gradually eases up to Chumik Nakpo. Overnight camping.

Day 7: Chumik Nakpo - Shingo La-Lakong (trekking). Early breakfast. 16 Km hike to reach Lakong or Lakham (4400 meters) passing by Shingo La (5100meters). The climb to the pass is not a by Himalayan standards, but the downhill through the glacier is quite steep. A series of prayer flags mark the Shingo La. From the top of the Pass, there are spectacular views of the peaks of Ladakh. Witness the impressive backdrop of the Baralacha range. This is one of the longest and tiring days with a total of approx. 7-8 hours walking. Overnight camping.

Day 8: Lakong - Kurgiak (trekking). Cover 14 km to reach Kurgiak (4060 meters), in about 6-7 hours. New mountains fill the landscape, once we are entering Zanskar ancient Tibetan Kingdom. The hike passes by Kargyak, the highest permanent settlement in Zanskar valley. Overnight camping.

Day 9: Kurgiak - Purne (trekking). Trekking to reach Purne (3950 meters), covering 12 km in approx. 5-6 hours. Overnight camping.

Day 10: Purne - Phuktal Gompa - Purne (trekking). Visit Phuktal Gompa (3800 meters), one the most impressive Gompas (Buddhist temple) in the Ladakh Kingdom. The monastery, situated on a limestone cliff is impressive with an assembly hall carved out of a huge cave. The trek will cover approx 14 km with departure and arrival to Purne. Overnight camping.

Day 11: Purne - Ichar (trekking). Cross small Canyons of Pudding stones, which lead to IChar village (3800meters). The trail over hangs Tsarap and is hard going. Cross the villages of Cha, Kaydang, Hamuni and Surle. Arrive at Ichar after 5-6 hours after covering 16 km. Overnight camping.

Day 12: Ichar - Mune (trekking). From Ichar we go down to Reru. From Reru the trail becomes rich in flowers up to Mune. Trekking to reach Mune (3650 m) in approx. 5-6 hours (18 km). Overnight camping.

Day 13: Mune - Rangdum (4x4). Transfer by 4x4 in a very beautiful road surrounded by mountains with more then 7200 meters such as Nun and Kun. The road includes the Pinzala pass with 5000 meters, to reach Rangdum (3600 meters). Overnight camping.

Day 14: Rangdum–Leh (4x4). Transfer by 4x4 (300 km) to reach Leh (3500 meters). Overnight in hotel.

Day 15: Free Day in Leh, capital of Ladakh. Optional Gompa visit or Rafting in Indus River.

Day 16: Leh – New Delhi. Transfer to airport to fly back to Delhi.
On arrival at Delhi, transfer to downtown. Free afternoon for city tour in old & new Delhi. Transfer to international airport (after dinner).

Day 17: Travel back home. Flight back home. Arrive to your destination.
