Finland is a winter wonderland and in this tour you will experience many great things it has to offer. Hossa area, in north-eastern Finland, close to the Russian border is the stage for this week. In Hossa you can enjoy the extreme tranquility and snow-white scenery far away from the tourist masses. The remote woodland of the area is home for many wild animals and at least some reindeer will be seen during the week as well as plenty of tracks on the snow. In the evenings you can enjoy the genuine Finnish sauna and local food delicacies.
Tour Itinerary:
Day 1: Arrival
Arrival at Kuusamo airport where your guide will be welcoming you. A ten minute’s transfer to the center of Kuusamo where accommodation and dinner at a hotel.
Day 2: Husky farm
After breakfast we will visit a husky farm just outside (4 km) the Kuusamo town center. On arrival at the farm, we will be greeted by owner who will explain about the life and training of the huskies. He will also give us a sled driving lesson, and then it’s off into the wilderness! We’ll drive a 10 kilometer tour through snow-white forests and frozen lakes enjoying the pure nature and tranquility. Two people take it in turns to sharing driving their own sledge with 4 dogs unless they wish only to sit in the sledge and enjoy the scenery. On return, snacks, coffee and juice will be served in front of log fire in the traditional Finnish tepee (kota). In the afternoon we will have a one hour transfer to Hossa where we will accommodate in the Hotel Hossan lomakeskus.
Day 3: Cross-country skiing
In the morning there will be an introduction about the area and the rest of the week’s program. After the lunch we will learn the basics of cross-country skiing which is one of the most popular wintertime hobbies in Finland. Then we will test our skiing skills practically and make a short tour through the flat pine forest and over the lakes. We may see some reindeer which are a common sight in Hossa. Hossa area offers a wide range of well-prepared ski tracks both easy and more challenging ones with ups and downs so after the tour together you can ski on your own as well.
Day 4: Snowshoeing
It is time to learn snowshoeing! After the short introduction we will start the excursion straight from the hotel. The route takes us through the ridges and lakes to the Hossa Visitor Centre (4 km) for lunch. At the information center we can also have a look at the exhibition which tells about the nature and history of the surrounding area. Return to the hotel snowshoeing or by car. Before the dinner it is nice to relax in hot sauna and if you are brave enough – try to roll in the snow!
Day 5: Reindeer farm
After breakfast we will set off for a reindeer farm situated just 2 kilometers from the hotel. We can take a short loop of a reindeer ride, hear about the life of a reindeer herder and try our lassoing skills. Before leaving the farm we will have a delicious lunch. In the afternoon free time for skiing and snowshoeing.
Day 6: Optional activities
The program of the last day is up to you. Everybody can choose what to do between several activities available. You may take part in an optional snowmobile safari or do some more skiing or snowshoeing. It’s also possible to make a fishing trip on your own. If you just want to take it easy you maybe visit Hossa Visitor Centre and watch some of the slide shows introducing the area also in summertime. Some small souvenirs can be purchased there too. In the evening it is time for final sauna and delicious dinner that will be enjoyed in Seipiniemi forest camp.
Day 7: Return
Breakfast and transfer to Kuusamo airport.
