Tour Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival. Fly in from Fairbanks and arrive at Iniakuk Lake Wilderness Lodge shortly after noon. Unpack, relax and soak in the surroundings, go canoeing, take a walk or wet a line. Day 2: Kobuk River Shee Fishing Whirlwind Adventure, overnight at Iniakuk Lake Wilderness Lodge. Begin the day with a 45-minute flight to the Kobuk River, slow-moving and 100 yards across in most places, it is home of the mighty Sheefish. Your privately-chartered floatplane flight covers 80 miles of sparkling rivers, lakes and rugged mountains before landing within a few feet of the fishing hole. You will gear up on the gravel bar while your guide inflates a small raft and describes how to tackle the “Tarpon of the North.” This nickname comes from the fish’s propensity to leap in the air once hooked in the meandering waters of the Kobuk River. Sheefish, also known as Inconnu, range from 20-50 pounds and are caught on heavy, sinking flies and large, flashy spinners. They begin spawning in mid to late July in the Kobuk River, so best fishing times are early August to mid-September. This is one of the best kept sport fish secrets of the north, combining superb fishing, clean water and stunning scenery. The day ends with your return flight to Iniakuk Lake Wilderness Lodge where hot showers and cold drinks await. Day 3: Wild and Scenic Float Trip Whirlwind Adventure, overnight at Iniakuk Lake Wilderness Lodge. Float down the outlet of Iniakuk Lake for the day. We’ll stop for lunch along the way and enjoy the peace and quiet of river travel. At the end of the trip a floatplane awaits to fly you back to Iniakuk Lake Wilderness Lodge in time for dinner. Day 4: Fly to Gates of the Arctic Caribou Cabin and overnight Shortly after breakfast a privately-chartered floatplane will arrive to take you and your guide 100 miles north to the Gates of the Arctic Caribou Cabin where you will stay the next two nights. Spend the rest of the day hiking or relaxing on the porch enjoying open tundra life above tree line. Day 5: Overnight at Gates of the Arctic Caribou Cabin More hiking, canoeing, birding or fishing for grayling and lake trout. As always the covered porch is available for those simply too overwhelmed by the beauty of it all to move. This will be your last night in the Brooks Range, so soak up the wood stove heat and keep an eye out for Northern Lights. Day 6: Departure.
