"In the footsteps of Arne Sucksdorff" offers the opportunity to live, during a brief period, all the sceneries – landscapes, plants and animals - that served as inspiration to the most important photographer of the region. Abandoning the fame & glory, he proved that the traditional way-of-life is responsible for the conservation of Pantanal to these days. Travelers can contribute to an environmental and cultural Institute with his name.

Tour Itinerary:

Day 1: Reception at the airport and immediate transfer to the traditional town of Poconé. Then 65 km on an old cattle track which passes through many large ranches and various diversified environments, arriving at Carandá lodge by late afternoon, as the many Hyacinth Macaws that live in the surrounding palm-trees are returning to roost. A night safari after dinner – an opportunity to see rare animals, such as ocelots, foxes and, with luck, jaguars. Overnight at Carandá lodge. Includes: (D).

Day 2: Caranda. After breakfast, a hike along the ‘Orchid Trail’, designed by the botanist Maria Sucksdorff. After lunch, an expedition to the Paraguayzinho river, with a canoe trip and piranha fishing. Observation of the sunset at the Porto do Rosário, at the bank of the Paraguaizinho river, where the ashes of Arne Sucksdorff were scattered. Overnight at Carandá lodge. Includes: (B), (L), (D).

Day 3: Caranda. Early start with a 5am departure for one of the largest nesting sites in the whole Pantanal, with thousands of individuals of migratory birds such as wood-storks and spoonbills. Arriving there at sunrise, breakfast is served, followed by hiking and guided visits (in small groups) to the nesting sites. Back to the lodge for a late lunch, with the rest of afternoon free. Overnight at Carandá lodge. Includes: (B), (L), (D).

Day 4: Caranda. After breakfast, horse back riding to the curious Rosário Hill, a rare limestone mountain-cave in the middle of the Swampland. Return to the lodge for lunch. Hiking in the afternoon. Overnight at Carandá lodge. Includes: (B), (L), (D).

Day 5: Caranda - Chapada dos Guimaraes. Early in the morning, departure from Carandá lodge for the town of Poconé, requiring a 65 km journey which crosses many old farms. As this route is not built on an artificial embankment, the feeling which it brings of visiting an unexplored area and having contact with the local people and their habits, foods and ways of life is extremely powerful. After Poconé, ‘back to the future’, with a 1-hour journey on asphalt to Cuiabá, and then on to Chapada dos Guimarães - a completely different environment. Observation of the sunset from the top of the plateau, at the Cidade de Pedra. Accommodation in the neighborhoods of the pleasant town. Overnight at Villa Guimarães hotel. Includes: (B), (L), (D).

Day 6: Chapada dos Guimaraes - Nobres. After breakfast, visits to the National Park where, with walks through the Scrubland there is the chance to take relaxing dips in its many waterfalls and crystalline rivers, including the highest waterfall in the region: the Véu de Noiva, with its fall of 86 m entering a majestic canyon. Lunch in one of the waterfalls and departure to Nobres, descending and surrounding the Plateau, passing by the huge lake of the Manso hydroelectric and near to the headwater of the important Cuiabá river.
