This 9-day trip is for climbers who are eager to reach the summit of Elbrus but wish to maximize their chance of a successful ascent by acclimatising on a glaciated pass in the nearby Caucasus Range.
The trip starts from arrival into Mineralnye Vody where we meet you to transfer to the hotel in Terskol in the Baksan valley. Terskol lies almost at the end of the Baksan Valley, at the foot of Elbrus (Europe's highest mountain). This village is the best-developed mountain sports center in the 1000km length of the Caucasus - a range that could swallow up the Alps!
The first part of the trip is back-packing to the Green Hotel to camp and acclimatise before the ascent of Elbrus. It will be porter-supported to carry the communal camping equipment and food; you carry all of your own personal equipment including sleeping bag and mat. We climb to the Eastern Jankuat Pass, 3600m, which provides superb panoramas of the Caucasus Range as well as good acclimatisation and practice with your crampons and walking on glaciers. For the ascent of Elbrus we use a cable car and chairlift to take us to a height of 3800m, From here we walk up to stay in either one of the huts or to camp at 4200m; a snowcat is often available for hire.
Though gentle-angled, the ascent of Elbrus requires the use of crampons and an ice axe. Although the fist 2 days will provide practice with these it is important for you to be fully competent with their use before the trip.
