Our journey begins aboard our comfortable, ice-strengthened expedition ship as we depart Ushuaia (the world’s southernmost city) for the Falklands. All of the crossings have the potential to produce excellent sightings of cetaceans and pelagic birds especially at this time of year when migrant marine wildlife moves south for the summer. Over twenty cetaceans live in the waters explored on our voyage and our guides will be on constant watch for both mammals and birds near our ship. The Falklands archipelago is famous amongst naturalists for its vast concentrations of sub-Antarctic wildlife and while we will visit the charming capital, Port Stanley, the bulk of our time will be spent exploring the impressive seabird colonies of the remote outer islands.
We expect to see Rockhopper, Gentoo and Magellanic Penguin rookeries, and colonies of regal Black-browed Albatross and Blue-eyed Shags. There are approximately three thousand South American Sea Lion on the Falklands and we have a good chance of seeing this handsome beast. We will constantly scan the waters surrounding the archipelago for sightings of Dusky, Peale’s, the cute Hourglass, the huge Risso’s and the especially attractive Commerson’s Dolphin. the mighty Blue whale
Our voyage traverses some of the most interesting areas in the Southern Ocean; notably the Falkland and South Georgia Islands, both of which are renowned as amongst the richest of all Subantarctic islands. South Georgia’s rugged beauty is worthy of Antarctica itself, while the Falkland Islands are better known as the battlegrounds for the 1982 Anglo-Argentine War. Several days are spent cruising from one island group to the next until we find ourselves at the very tip of this icy continent.
This journey to Antarctica is a truly once-in-a-lifetime experience – except, of course, for those who love it so much they simply have to return!
