From the source of the White Nile on Lake Victoria to the snow-capped Ruwenzori Range, harboring some of the last remaining Mountain Gorillas, to the extensive landscapes of Queen Elizabeth National Park, Uganda is an equatorial country of forests, mountains, savannas and astonishing contrasts. No other area in Africa can match its amazing diversity of habitats, and this richness is reflected in its incredible wildlife. In a country roughly the same size as England, there are over 330 mammal species (including 24 primates) and a bird list of over 1,000 species. Based on our many years of experience in Uganda, we have cherry-picked the finest mammal-viewing destinations to ensure that you enjoy one of the very best explorations of this amazing land.
Our adventure begins as we depart Entebbe, on the shores of the mighty Lake Victoria, for Kibale Forest which lies east of the snowcapped Ruwenzori Mountains and protects a diverse array of primates. This is one of the best places in the world to see Chimpanzees and we will dedicate a whole day to searching the forest for an encounter with these, our closest relative. Leaving the verdant Kibale Forest behind us we journey to Queen Elizabeth National Park. Protecting the entire Ugandan shores of Lake Edward and the western shores of Lake George, this vast reserve boasts impressive crater scenery, expansive grasslands, tropical forests and large herds of Elephant, Buffalo and antelope as well as the famed tree-climbing Lions of the region. Our next destination is Buhoma, headquarters of the famous Bwindi Impenetrable Forest. Here, in the riches of the Rwenzori Mountains, one finds healthy populations of some of the planet’s last remaining Mountain Gorillas. In the expert and friendly company of our local guides, we will climb the forested trails to a family unit in the hope of getting to observe a family group for an hour - this is a rare privilege indeed, rated by many to be the greatest wildlife experience on the planet. Close to the Tanzanian border, our final destination is Lake Mburo, geographically part of the southern savannas, and here we will enjoy viewing the likes of typically southern species like Eland, Burchell’s Zebra and Impala, all of which do not feature in other Ugandan reserves.
