Moremi: Moremi lies at the eastern extremity of the Okavango Delta and habitats here range from wide-open floodplains to marshes, lagoons, papyrus fringed channels, vast reed-beds, woodland and savannah. As a result of the extremely variable habitat, the wildlife diversity is phenomenal, making this one of the most action packed wildlife reserves in the world. The lush grasses and reed beds are home to water loving Hippopotamus, Red Lechwe and Sitatunga, a specialized swamp dwelling antelope. Thriving on the islands and in the surrounding woodlands are Giraffe, African Elephant, and an impressive suit of Africa’s big predators including Lion, Leopard and Spotted Hyena. To boot we will stand our best chances for the endangered African Wild Dog, the Okavango is one of the final strongholds of these unique “painted” canines and Moremi is indeed one of the best reserves in Africa for viewing this endangered and increasingly rare species.
Khwai: Khwai is home to some impressive old elephant bulls that revel in the cool waters of the river and are far more approachable while drinking and bathing than the breeding herds. Like Moremi this area is again full of wildlife; Leopard, Serval, African Wildcat and Lion are common predators and though less common Cheetah and Wild Dog can also be found. General game includes Southern Giraffe, Burchell’s zebra, Impala, Tessebe and Red Lechwe with magnificent Roan and Sable antelope also possible.
Savuti (within Chobe National Park): In sharp contrast to the dynamic water wonderland of the Okavango, is the dessert-like seemingly endless desolate landscape of the Savuti, famous for the dry marsh, sand ridge and volcanic hills, unique to this area. Adding this to the Botswana itinerary allows for a balanced and varied experience. The marsh once contained the waters of the Makgadikgadi superlake, and the dead trees provide a stark reminder of the erratic flow of the Savuti channel over the years. High predator concentrations in Savuti have set the scene for innumerable wildlife documentaries, including National Geographic’s dramatic “Eternal Enemies” which narrates the troubled relationship between Lion and Hyena. The Savuti is also famed for its unique Elephant killing Lions celebrated in BBC’s Planet Earth documentary.
Chobe National Park: Chobe National Park is home to the largest single concentration of Elephant and game viewing on the river consists for the most part of Elephants mudwallowing, Elephants feeding and drinking and more Elephants swimming - the density of these colossal beasts is nothing short of astounding! Great herds of Buffalo, one of the dominant herbivores of the region, also make use of the waters to satiate their thirst, whilst on the floodplains we may find herds of elegant Red Lechwe, Tsessbe, Waterbuck, Roan, Eland, Sable and Giraffe. This will provide our best opportunity for the rare Puku and the shy Chobe Bushbuck, both localized to the Chobe riverfront. Rich in plant life, the Chobe River area is replete with Bachestegia sandveld, mopane woodland, mixed Combretum veld, floodplain grassland and riverine woodland.
Victoria Falls: The local name, Mosi-Oa-Tunya, “The Smoke that Thunders”, accurately describes the rising shining spray and foaming waters that roar deafeningly as the river hurls itself 103m down the falls. David Livingstone “discovered” the falls in 1855, giving them the highest honour he could by naming them after his Queen.
Livingstone is also one of the meccas for purchasing traditional African art and crafts and we will have time to browse through the markets, which offer a wide range of carvings (in both wood and stone), kitchen utensils and basket-ware.
