Agra: At Agra we visit the fabled Taj Mahal. This white marble monument was built by the Shah Jahan as a memorial to his beloved wife, Mumtaz, and is famous for the elegance of its design and the immense numbers of intricately carved and inlaid semi-precious stones that adorn its walls. Further explorations of Agra will take us to the fabled Agra Red Fort, which is found standing in the middle of the city limits, upriver from the Taj. This truly impressive sandstone fort serves as a constant reminder of the unique history of the region.
Ranthambore: Locating the magnificent Bengal Tiger is our quest during our time here and requires a combination of skill and patience with a sprinkling of luck thrown in. Declared a “Project Tiger” reserve, we will use open-top jeeps to explore the park, watching for telltale signs such as pugmarks or scat in the road and listening for the alarm calls of Sambar, Muntjac and Spotted Deer. With luck, these will lead us to a Tiger padding along a dusty track or sprawled out in the dappled sunlight of a forest thicket. Looking into the amber eyes of this, the largest of all the cats, undoubtedly ranks as one of the world’s ultimate wildlife experiences! Sloth Bear along with packs of Dhole (Asiatic Wild Dog), Jungle Cat and Asiatic Leopard are amongst the more elusive and exciting mammals to be found here.
Gir: Gir is famous for being the last remaining destination on the Asian continent where the Asiatic (or Indian) Lion can still be found in the wild. Although these lions are genetically distinct from those of Africa, they bear a similar stately appearance. Gir is dominated by mixed deciduous and thorn forest bisected by a number of rivers making up the ideal habitat for Lion. But Gir offers more than Lions alone and is host to one of the largest populations of Leopard within any park in India. In fact, this park is famous for producing regular diurnal sightings of this elusive cat. The three smaller wildcats - the Jungle Cat, Desert Cat and Rusty Spotted Cat, also inhabit Gir but we would be very lucky indeed to encounter one of these more elusive felines. Gir also has a thriving population of Sambar, Chital (Spotted Deer), Nilgai (Blue Bull Antelope) and Wild Boar.
Velvadar: This reserve was created to protect the beautiful Blackbuck, which is common here in large herds. Wolf and Striped Hyaena are also present and we have a small but realistic chance of viewing these incredible mammals here. This small reserve is also famous for a number of special birds, these being the localized endemic Sykes’s Lark and the highly sought after Lesser Florican.
One-horned Rhinoceros Extension:
Day 1: Delhi to to Kaziranga
Day 2: Kazaringa
Day 3: Kazaringa
Day 4: Kazaringa
Day 5: Kaziranga to Delhi and depart
Kazaringa: A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Kazaringa is famous for its healthy populations of armor-plated Great Indian Rhinoceros, heavily muscled Gaur (Indian Bison) and troops of Asian Elephant. Kazaringa’s other star mammal is the splay-horned Water Buffalo, and although the domesticated version of this species is quite common in India, its wild cousin is now one of India’s rarest mammals. We will set off early each morning on elephant-back or open jeep for some up-close and personal encounters with Rhinos and viewing these otherworldly creatures in the early morning mist makes for a thrilling encounter
