Tanzania is the quintessential African destination and provides the ultimate safari and big-game experience. Nowhere else on the planet exist such a great volume and diversity of large animals. Our safari is designed to maximize your big game and wildlife experience by selecting the very best and most accessible destinations in these two vast lands.
Our visit is carefully timed so that we might bear witness to unbelievable numbers of wildebeest, zebra and antelope, an unrivalled and primeval wonder of the natural world. Where prey numbers are abundant, so too are their predators - Lion, Cheetah, Leopard, Spotted Hyena and others live out their lives following these large concentrations, providing us with unrivalled viewing opportunities. The Serengeti is ravishingly beautiful and offers long, undisturbed views and utterly dramatic panoramas. Not only is this a great place in which to find game, the wide green-gold savannas, dotted with thorn trees, make it ideal for photography.
This area is home to the Masaai people, tall, proud, nomadic warriors famous for their legendary prowess in battle and single-handed acts of bravery in fights with wild animals. An excursion for those interested in Masaai culture will be a visit to a traditional Masaai village where a local guide will explain their unique culture as you watch the people busy about their daily chores. You will also be treated to a display of the famous Masaai dancing and enjoy excellent photographic opportunities.
If this is your first visit to Africa, you will be delighted by a plethora of typical African birds; Ostrich, Hamerkop, Secretarybird, Bateleur, the hornbills, woodhoopoes, weavers and waxbills. We use a high standard of accommodation throughout the tour and comfortable safari vehicles with pop-up roof hatches to optimize game viewing. With a maximum size of six participants, our small groups enjoy expertly-guided and unparalleled African mammal, wildlife and cultural experiences in some truly incredible lodges. It’s no wonder that this is one of our most popular tours, and for private groups of family or friends, we cannot give it a higher recommendation. Many other options are also available including unforgettable luxury camping safaris.
Tarangire: 110 km southwest of Arusha, Tarangire National park is literally teeming with wildlife throughout the year. The unique Acacia savanna and Baobab studded woodlands provide a refuge for Lion, Leopard, African Buffalo and large herds of grazing ungulates, as well as over 550 bird species. However, Tarangire is most famous for its huge numbers of Elephant that congregate around the Tarangire River and is home to some of the largest herds in Africa.
Lake Manyara: This teeming reserve is dominated by a shallow alkaline Rift Valley lake after which the reserve is named. The park has a diverse range of habitats, including dense forest, Acacia woodlands, grasslands, floodplains and wetlands. This diversity results in impressive number of mammal and bird species in a relatively small national park. One of Lake Manyara’s main attractions is the vast numbers of Greater and Lesser Flamingos and the lake sometimes holds some of the largest concentrations of these birds of any of the East African Rift Valley lakes. The park was originally set up to protect the Elephant herds that have given fame to the area. Lake Manyara is also celebrated for its tree-climbing lions while large herds of Buffalo, Cheetah, Masai Giraffe, Hippo and Impala also make the area home.
Serengeti: Extending for an incredible 15,000km², the Serengeti is one of the world’s largest natural sanctuaries. Despite the vast space, the numbers of game that we can expect to see is astounding. The Serengeti, consists mostly of grasslands interspersed with Acacia woodlands and rocky outcrops. There is little permanent water and this fact, combined with a fairly regular rainfall pattern, has resulted in the world-famous Wildebeest migration. Over two million large ungulates move between the Serengeti in Tanzania and Masai Mara in Kenya. We have the privilege to bear witness to these unbelievable numbers of wildebeest, zebra and antelope. Where prey is found so are predators and Lion, Cheetah, Leopard, Spotted Hyaena and others are present in good numbers.
Ngorongo: The crater is deluxe Big Five territory and a photographer’s dream. Most of the animals are extremely relaxed and habituated to the presence of human admirers and the high crater walls, usually cloaked in a pure white frosting of clouds, make for dramatic back-drops to animal photographs. The crater floor provides a mini-example of a complete African ecosystem with forests, lakes, grasslands, swamps and rivers. Over 30,000 large animals reside in the crater and huge concentrations of Blue Wildebeest and Burchell’s Zebra are supplemented by smaller numbers of African Elephant (we can expect to find some of the crater’s famous Giant Tuskers), African Buffalo, Black Rhinoceros, Hippopotamus, Topi and Thomson’s and Grant’s Gazelles. Predators are fantastic and we can count individuals by the dozen, these include Lion, Cheetah, Leopard, Spotted Hyena, Bat-eared Fox and Golden and Black-backed Jackal.
