Tour Itinerary:
Day 1: Rotterdam, the second largest city of the Netherlands and the world's largest port is where we start this tour. Our first visit will be Schiedam, a city part of the Rotterdam metropolitan area. It is well known for the jenever (gin), its historical center with its canals, and the tallest historical windmills in the world. Of course we will cruise the canals and taste the gin here. After lunch we continue to literally the corner of Holland (Hoek van Holland) where we visit the Maeslantkering (Maeslant Storm Surge Barrier) and learn about water management in this area of the Netherlands. On our way to the beach of Rockanje we make a stop in the borough of Brielle (brill in English). Brielle is a very old, fortified town. The city is famed for its city fortifications complete with city moat. There are many historic buildings in the center, among which are the Arsenal from 1708 (now a library) and Old City Hall (now a museum). After checking in at our hotel in Rockanje, you have time to enjoy the beach or for a walk in the dunes of Voorne.
Day 2: In the morning we pass over the Haringvliet dam, one of the many constructions of the Delta Works. We are on our way to Dreischor, a village with a history that dates from 1206. The hart of the town is the church, very unique is that the houses where build in a perfect cirkel around the church. Nearby we find the Watersnood museum. This museum commemorates and remembers the "Watersnood", the flood disaster of 1 February 1953. Zierikzee is a city where history has passed through. The old medieval harbor of the town Zierikzee is under influence of the tide. Beautiful old ships are mirrored in the water. After we have enjoyed our lunch we continue to the Eastern Scheldt storm surge barrier and the museum of the Delta Works at Neeltje Jans. There are several expositions from the 1953 floods, whales to mussels. Outside you will get impressed by the greatness of the Delta structure or go for a walk and enjoy the abundant flora and fauna. Because there is more to experience in Zeeland, we can't stay all day unfortunately. Inspired by Dutch painters like Mondriaan en Toorop we go to city at the beach "Domburg". On a bike we explore the forest, beach, dunes and the city. Our day ends at the town of Vlissingen, where we see the ships pass by through the Schelde.
