The Cuchumatanes Mountains are a geological miracle in that they have nothing to do with the Western Volcanic Corridor for which Guatemala is better known. The Cuchumatanes are a series of great plateaus thrust upwards eons ago when the Pacific and Atlantic plates collided to raise Central America out of the sea. These highlands have a climate and landscape like nothing you'd ever expect to find in a tropical country. High altitudes and low rainfall have created an expansive desert-like environment with miniature trees and scrub which causes the traveler to feel like a giant exploring an alien world.
Begin your journey in the far out city of Nebaj situated on the upward slope of the Cuchumatanes Range and climb up onto the high plain. From there the trek connects you through the tiny way-out villages of Nebaj, Uspantan, Acul, Todos Santos, and finally Todos Santos. Days are spent traversing the high mesas and walking down into and up back out of the deep ravines that separate them. Nights are spent on the ranches of members of the different communities through which we pass; sometimes in their beds and sometimes in our tents but always huddled comfortably under blankets and sleeping bags with a view of one of the biggest, starriest skies in the world. There is also an option in the middle of the trip to stay at an equestrian ranch and participate in a tour on horseback of the surrounding area. Notes: Rates vary depending on type of overnight accommodations - camping, budget, mid-range, high-end - requested, whether or not you would like to be met at the airport and if you choose to participate in any optional activities.
