Project details:
Teach English in Buenos Aires at Colegio Ingles Horacio Watson and The Academy - School of English. Volunteers will find themselves teaching English to students aged anywhere from 5 to adults. The Colegio is a bilingual private school where children from a variety of backgrounds attend until finishing secondary school. English and subjects taught in English comprise at least half of the curriculum, and so assistant teachers whose native language is English are in great demand. Volunteers can also assist in sports coaching (football, rugby and hockey) if they choose. You do not need to speak Spanish for this project but those having a good command of the language can opt to take part additionally as assistant teachers in the Spanish periods during the morning as well as working in the afternoon with English. The school has recently won an international award for excellence in education.
Why the project needs volunteers:
The children who attend the school do not often get the chance to practice English, and therefore volunteers are needed to focus on conversational English. Volunteers will be teaching assistants in the classroom, and they will supplement the lessons by helping students with conversation and pronunciation as native English speakers. Additional activities include English workshops with students' parents & one-on-one coaching sessions with teachers and students that are in need of extra help. English is a much sought after skill in Argentina, opening up doors to advanced educational opportunities and career choices.
What kind of skills you need to go on this type of project:
You don't need any qualifications to participate in a teaching project in Argentina. Volunteers should have a genuine love for children, be self-motivated, reliable, and adaptable and have plenty of patience. You should also have a willingness to work hard. Volunteers on the teaching program will be trained before they go on their project through 40-hour on-line TEFL program.
Your role as a volunteer:
Volunteers will be assistant teachers helping the school's regular English teachers by providing native English speakerīs conversation and pronunciation skills. Volunteers can also get involved in assisting sports teaching.
An additional option is to assist in the running of occasional English workshops for students' parents. If a volunteer has a specific skills or experience (e.g. a trade), this should be communicated with the coordinator in good time prior to arrival, in order that these classes may be prepared. It will also be possible to assist in English coaching classes for the staff of the school. The idea is to work not just with the students, but the community of the school as a whole. This project is ideal for people who are interested in pursuing a career in teaching as it will give them the opportunity to have some hands-on practical experience with a variety of ages, skill levels and backgrounds. If you have a good command of Spanish then you can get involved in teaching other classes within the school, please let the operations team know if you are interested in taking part in this option.
Accommodation:
You will be staying in a shared dormitory room in a hostel near to all the main facilities in the city. You will be accommodated in mixed dorms with up to 6 people in one room. This will be a simple room with bunk beds and shared communal facilities. Breakfast is included in your placement fee but you'll need to buy your own lunch and dinner so please budget for this. There are self-catering facilties at the hostel so you can cook for yourself if you wish.
Where the project is based:
The school is a bilingual school that follows the Argentine national curriculum. The school draws its student body from a range of socio-economic backgrounds, and the students are at many different levels of ability. The school is located in the Capital Federal residential area of Buenos Aires. Buenos Aires is Argentina's largest city and its capital, and offers volunteers the opportunity to experience one of the most cosmopolitan, lively and dramatic cities in the world.
