The Cree River flows from Crethon Lake north into Black Lake up the middle of Northern Saskatchewan. The Cree River was largely ignored by canoeists until the past 10 years. Now many groups a year paddle down the river. In spite of this, you rarely meet another group on the Cree River.
The Cree River is not a technically difficult river. There are several minor rapids near the start of the trip and from then on its clear paddling. You'll be going with the current all the way. It is one of the few Northern Saskatchewan rivers that is all river. There is a good chance of seeing wildlife every day. It is common to see moose and black bear. Bald eagles and osprey circle above. Numerous water birds and animals live in and along the river. Fishing is excellent.
The group will meet in Points North in north east Saskatchewan. From there you will fly by float plane in to Cree Lake. After paddling down to Wapata Lake a float plane will take the group back to Points North. Transwest Air flies daily to Points North from Saskatoon. Or, if you arrive in Missinipe you can catch a ride to Points North with our van.
Your Itinerary:
Day 0: June 20. Arrive in Points North, Northern Saskatchewan. Transwest Air flies to Points North from Saskatoon several times a day. Your guide will meet you at the air terminal. We will have a hotel room waiting for you. Plan to arrive in late afternoon or evening. Your guide will spend the evening talking with you about trip details. You'll get your own waterproof canoe barrel to pack your gear into.
Day 1: June 21. After breakfast you will board the float plane and head for Hermitage Bay on Cree Lake and begin your journey down the Cree River.
Days 2-5: June 22-25. You will continue down the Cree River arriving on Wapata Lake on June 25th. You'll camp along the river's back. You'll sleep in a tent with a canopy of stars overhead.
Day 6: June 26. The float plane will arrive in the morning to transport the group back to Points North. Back in Points North you can either catch a flight back to Saskatoon that day or the next. If you choose to stay in Points North for the night, the group will have a celebratory meal together. Our van will leave for Missinipe the morning of the 27th.
