Located in northeastern Saskatchewan, the Porcupine River is, an unspoiled, clear-water river in a pristine wilderness setting of spectacular beauty. The river flows through numerous rapids, many of these rapids are run able by experienced paddlers. The Porcupine River flows over a number of spectacular falls and through several canyons. The camping along this river is second to none. You’ll be camping on flat, open, jack pine forests. You’ll sleep in thick, undisturbed moss. As you paddle down the Porcupine River, Bald Eagles are often seen circling overhead near the top of the cliffs. Black Bears and Moose can sometimes be seen along the river. The fishing is incredible.
Very few people visit the Porcupine in a summer. Those who do boast of its white water and awesome camping spots. The river is tucked away in a little known corner of the province. It is highly unlikely that you will see others on the river. Yet, many argue this river rates number 1 in Saskatchewan. After paddling the Porcupine, it's hard to disagree with that assessment. The trip is designed for those who have experience in running Class II+ rapids. It is one of northern Saskatchewan’s little known gems.
Bald Eagles circle overhead near the top of the cliffs. You will likely see some Bears and Moose can sometimes be seen along the river. Some groups see caribou. The fishing is incredible. There are numerous rapids. There are only a few that absolutely need to be portaged. There are many that are questionable. The group will have to take a close look at these.
You can fly by commercial plane to Points North with Transwest Air from Saskatoon. Or you can drive to Missinipe and ride with us in our van to Points North. From there we will board a float plane and fly to Selwyn Lake. From here we will begin our decent of the Porcupine River. The river flows into the Fond du Lac River. From the confluence we fly by float plane back to Points North. From there you would either board the commercial plane back to Saskatoon or climb into our van for the long ride back to Missinipe.
Your canoe trip on the Porcupine River will help support the local, northern Saskatchewan economy. This operator employs many local people – both native and non-native. As much as possible, supplies and other needs are purchased locally. We are involved in the local community government and community events. Coming on this canoe trip will help us continue to do these things.
The Porcupine River remains one of the few intact ecosystems in the Boreal Forest. Fortunately for the Porcupine and those who love to travel this river, the immediate area is not threatened at this time. We are working through our partners along with CPAWS to help monitor activities in the region. A portion of the proceeds from this trip will go towards supporting CPAWS. CPAWS is the only environmental organization working to protect this region of northern Saskatchewan.
