The luxury of a walking safari is being able use your senses; listen, smell, feel things as you go along. It brings the sense of immediacy and of being part of the scene, which can be lost in a vehicle. Our walking itineraries offer you the chance to get close to nature and experience the bush. Our walking safaris are usually conducted as camping safaris, in which you camp every night in a beautiful location, near a river or on a large kopje. The walking party is escorted by pack animals such as donkeys carrying the camp and provisions or there might be a supply vehicle that erects the camp before the party's arrival. In game rich areas, our walking parties are escorted by armed Tanzanian rangers or Maasai warriors.
There are few experiences that can match a foot encounter with an elephant herd or walking through the short grass plains during the great migration. Short walking safaris of a few hours can be combined into a regular tour itinerary and expand the safari experience and the client's understanding of the wilderness. In general walking safaris are a family suited activity and demand no special fitness or experience. Many reserves, parks and wilderness areas in Tanzania offer superb hiking trails. Many ecosystems such as lowland Montane forest, craters and the Rift Valley escarpment can be experienced only by hiking. We offer a variety of hiking excursions that could be included in your normal lodge safari itinerary or full hiking itineraries that last up to 6 days. Some of the areas we hike in include the beautiful Udzungwa Mountains National Park, the Rift Valley escarpment and the Ngorongoro highlands.
Tour Itinerary:
Day 1: Arusha.
Whenever you arrive, you’ll be personally met and taken to a lovely resort on Mt. Meru, Africa’s 5th highest mountain. For those arriving early, optional activities can be arranged. Dinner and overnight at the resort.
Day 2: West Kilimanjaro.
Three days are now spent in a very remote, private 60,000-acre wilderness on the western slopes of Mt. Kilimanjaro. The morning drive from Arusha is past many small pretty peasant farms, market towns and small villages, before crossing a large open plane composed of wheat farms. There can be fabulous views of Mt Kibo, the Shira Plateau and even Mt Meru on clear days. Arrival in camp is met by fresh juice and a bush lunch. The late afternoon is spent meandering to the nearby Maasai village of Olmalog or simply relaxing in camp. A campfire using sustainable wood sources accompanies the dying light and sounds of the Maasai’s cattle heading back to their bomas. Overnight in an adventure camp.
Day 3: West Kilimanjaro.
Soon after breakfast you head by foot out with your guide and scout while the crew packs the camp to move it onto the plains on the lower slopes. During the morning walk, game grows more prevalent and zebra often canter away after approaching curiously. Giraffe, eland, impala and Grant’s gazelle are also usually seen. Picnic lunches are taken under the shade of an acacia tree, and there is then usually time to relax as the hottest part of the day passes over. At the end of the afternoon walk, you arrive camp.
