All our tours start in South Africa in Fouriesburg, a small farming community on the South African – Lesotho border.

This tour will take us over the top of the Maluti Mountain range in Lesotho into KwaZulu-Natal province of South Africa. We will drive the spectacular road from Butha-Buthe, past Oxbow, Afriski, and the Letseng Diamond Mine to the town of Mokhotlong at 200 km from Butha-Buthe. From there we continue further east via beautiful mountain trails to the top of the Sani Pass where we will spend the first night. On the second day we will descent the infamous Sani Pass to the South African province KwaZulu-Natal. The second night we will spend in the Drakensberg. On the third day we continue via the Drakensberg and the Golden Gate National Park to Fouriesburg in South Africa.

Your Itinerary:

Day 1: We will drive the spectacular road from Butha-Buthe, past Oxbow, Afriski, and the Letseng Diamond Mine to the town of Mokhotlong at 200 km from Butha-Buthe. This town has the reputation as being the coldest, driest and most remote place in Lesotho. The horses “parked” outside the shops give the town a Wild West feel. Lunch will be en route and we will stop at several places to enjoy the magnificent scenery. We will pass the highest point in Southern Africa, Thabana-Ntlenyana (3482 m). Overnight will be at Sani Top Chalet, where you find the highest pub in Africa.

Day 2: From Sani Top Chalet we descend the infamous Sani Pass. This is one of the most spectacular drives you can imagine. The descent starts at the Lesotho border post and will take you to the South African border post 8 km further down. For these 8 km we will need at least one and half hour. We cross the South African border and decent further to KwaZulu-Natal, then continue through the Drakensberg to one of the parks where we will spend the night.

Day 3: On the third day we travel through the Northern Drakensberg area, past the little towns of Winterton and Bergville, and over the Oliviershoek Pass back to the Free State. We then drive past the Sterkfontein Dam, the town of Phutaditjaba and the Golden Gate National Park back to Fouriesburg.

We will sleep in local villages, camp in the mountains or stay in lodges. You will have the possibility for hiking, pony trekking or fishing in Lesotho.
