All our tours start in South Africa in Fouriesburg, a small farming community on the South African–Lesotho border. We enter Lesotho at Caledon’s Gate and through the little town of Butha-Buthe, we continue in an eastern direction towards the Moteng Pass. After about 60 km we turn off the main road and follow the dirt road to the little village of Molapo. Just on the edge of the village we stop at the little settlement of Mamohase. This is an old family settlement where some of the houses have been converted into accommodation for guests. The family has kept the settlement authentic, which will give you the possibility to experience traditional Basotho family live. After settling in and a short rest we have several options to choose from:
- A guided walking tour through the village, where you will see all aspects of village life and experience life in a small mountain village (about 3,5 hours).
- A hiking tour along the Hololo River, where you will see many caves with beautiful ancient San rock paintings (about 2 hours).
For the more adventurous:
- A full day hiking tour to the summit of the mountain Khatibe, the highest peak in the area. This is a full day hike, four hours up and three hours down.
- Pony trekking. The Basotho ponies will take you far into the mountains and there is a choice between a short 2,5 hours ride or a full day, 6 hours ride.
We will stay over at Mamohase, where we will enjoy the traditional Basotho food, which is all organic, and all you will eat is produced by them in their garden. During the evening, while sitting around the fire, we can enjoy traditional cultural performances. The next day will also be available for activities. In the late afternoon we are back in Fouriesburg.
