The apocryphal story is that the first words of Castilian were in reference to the wines made in the valleys of the Ebro and its tributary the Rio (river) Oja. But there is more to La Rioja than just wine; explore medieval cities and monasteries, compare your footprints with dinosaur tracks at Enesco, or trek along the Camino de Santiago, one of Europe's oldest pilgrimage routes, still in use. La Rioja can be easily toured on foot.
Tour Itinerary:
Day 1: Flight to Madrid. Stay overnight in the central area of Madrid, just off the Plaza Major, the historical center of Habsburg Madrid. In the evening we will eat at a Tapas bar and of course drink a deep red wine from La Rioja.
Day 2: Day in Madrid. In the morning we will tour the Palacio Real, the largest royal palace in Europe. Velazquez, Tiepolo, Caravaggio, and Goya grace the walls and afterwards we will stroll through the gardens of the palace, the Campo del Moro. In the afternoon we will explore the museums that make up what is known as Madrid's Golden Triangle; the Prado, the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum, and the Reina Sofia Art Museum. The three art galleries virtually cover all of Spanish art. Tonight, after dinner, we will watch Flamenco.
Day 3: We travel this morning to La Rioja. North of Madrid we will stop at El Escorial, which was both a monastery and royal palace during the reign of Philip II and later we will journey to the Valley of the Fallen, Franco's mausoleum constructed for Republican dead following the Spanish Civil War. We will continue on to Laguardia, where we will spend several days. Tonight we will have a private wine tasting in one of the underground Bodegas that Laguardia is famous for.
Day 4: This morning we will explore more of the underground Bodegas and then the city itself, a warren of medieval streets and gothic gates. In the afternoon we will have a wine tour of the Marquis de Riscal estate. This is one of the most famous wineries in Spain. As we return to our hotel we will tour the remains of a Bronze Age settlement on the plains below the city. This evening you will have an opportunity to explore the city for yourself.
Day 5: This morning we tour the Ysios winery on the outskirts of Laguardia. This winery uses modern techniques to produce award winning wines. Later we walk along the Camono de Santiago (Santiago Way), still in use today. We will have a traditional lunch at a tapas bar in Logrono and then continue on to San Milan de la Cogolla to see the monasteries of Suso and Yuso. In the late afternoon we have a wine tasting at Bodega Marquis de Murrieta. We stay in Logrono for the evening.
Day 6: We visit the medieval town of Santo Domingo de la Calzada in the morning and walk its medieval streets. Later we drive to Briones and visit the Museum of the Culture of Wine at the Dinastia Vivanco Foundation, truly one of the great museums of the world and fully devoted to wine. In the evening we will visit Bodegas LAN. Overnight in Logrono.
Day 7: We leave La Rioja this morning. On the return to Madrid we will stop in Enisco to look at the dinosaur tracks that cover the hills. The tracks in this area are the most numerous (over 5000) in Europe. Continue on to Madrid and overnight.
