Tour Itinerary:
Day 1, Jan 16: Addis Ababa to Debre Markos ready for overnight transit at Shebel Hotel. Scenery north is worth seeing by road once on historic route.
Day 2, Jan 17: Debre Markos to Bahir Dar to visit Blue Nile Falls and some of the monasteries of Lake Tana Islands.
Day 3, Jan 18: Bahir Dar to Gondar for Castles and Baths.
Day 4, Jan 19: Fasiladas Baths and view Castles Enclosure of Gondar, once the capital of Imperial Ethiopia.
Day 5, Jan 20: Gondar to Debark for Simien Mountains. Overnight in Debark Town.
Day 6, Jan 21: Debark to Axum. This is transit only.
Day 7, Jan 22: Axum to see obelisks, Queen of Sheba Baths so called Ark of the Covenant Church, Museum and Saint Mary Zion.
Day 8, Jan 23: Axum to Adigrat transit.
Day 9, Jan 24: Adigrat to Mekele. Visit the Capital of north Ethiopia. Once the seat of government under Emperor Yohannes IV.
Visit Mekele Museum and monuments to the Civil War.
Day 10, Jan 25: Mekele to Lalibela to see rock hewn churches.
Day 11, Jan 26: Lalibela full day's view of churches. You can do this by mule or walking with Lalibela Tour Guide.
Day 12, Jan 27: Lalibela to Kombulcha (old Italinate town transit)
We stay overnight in Kombulcha. It isn't a touristic town but it is quite pleasant to wander around. Some interesting scenery. People seem quite friendly.
Day 13, Jan 28: Kombulcha to Addis Ababa.
Day 14, Jan 29: Addis Ababa to Rift Valley Lakes: Lake Awasa.
Day 15, Jan 30: Awasa to Arba Minch to see Lakes Abiya and Chamo.
Go on boat trip to view crocodiles and hippos.
Day 16, Jan 31: Arba Minch to Konso to see start of Tribes.
We visit some of the souther tribes of Ethiopia: eg Mursi, Banna,Konso peoples. See Lonely Planet for more details or Bradt Guide.
Day 17, Feb 01: Konso to Turmi Tribes visit.
Day 18, Feb 02: Turmi – Omo Rate – Turmi tribes visit.
Day 19, Feb 03: Turmi to Konso to see Konso culture.
Day 20, Feb 04: Turmi to Jinka tribes visit.
Day 21, Feb 05: Jinka tribes and markets.
Day 23, Feb 06: Jinka to Yabello. We stay in Yabello to visit the salt places.
Day 24, Feb 07: Yabello to El Sud – the Salt Places.
Day 24, Feb 08: Yabello to Yirq Alem. See ancient stones circles of
Tutufella and Tututtuti. Stay in crater forest hotel of Aragesh Lodge.
Day 25, Feb 09: Yirq Alem to Wendo Genet for thermal (hotwater springs and forest.
Day 26, Feb 10: Wendo Genet Forest and Hotwater Springs.
Day 27, Feb 11: Wendo Genet to Addis Ababa. Shopping and evening of culture. Stay with host family.
Day 28, Feb 12: Addis Ababa and Departure Day.
You can do this tour with just car hire and control the expenses yourself. Otherwise you can ask for a budget tour instead. Prices vary and become cheaper of group tour arranged.
