January is a wonderful month to tour South India – the scenery is lush green, the weather pleasant and our trip, 5-25 January, coincides with the harvest festival of Pongal.
Sacred multi-walled temple cities house gods and goddesses, bathing tanks, thousand-pillared dancing halls and we will have special access to the inner recessed one of the most incredible temples in South India. We stay in a heritage lodge on the fascinating waterways of the Kerala backwaters and see village life on foot and by boat. In Periyar National Park we go boating on Periyar Lake and take jungle walks with experienced guides. Fort Cochin and the traditional towns of Chettinad open a window onto a life gone by. We’ll learn all about spices on a Kerala plantation and watch classical dance, Bharatnatyam, against the magnificent backdrop of the rock carvings of the ancient capital of Mamallapuram. In Mumbai we take walks in the historic Fort area and feel the pusle of this great city. Our private boat will take us from Mumbai to Elephanta Island with its rock-cut caves depicting the Hindu god Shiva in overwhelming majesty. Tour Destinations: – Mamallapuram – Pondicherry – Chidambaram – Kumbakonam – Thanjavur – Chettinad – Madurai – Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary – Kerala Spice Plantation – Kerala Backwaters – Fort Cochin – Mumbai – Elephanta Island Notes: $5500 per person (single supplement $1400)
