Tour Itinerary: We begin our journey in Lima, the capital of Peru. After an evening in the hustle of this strongly Spanish-influenced city, we ride a bus north along the arid coast, then east and up into the mighty Andes of central Peru. Our destination is Huaraz, lying at an altitude of 10,000 feet in a wide river valley, the Callejon de Huaylas. Your first view of this fertile valley is dazzling. As the bus tops the last pass, the view of the ice-clad Cordillera Blanca spread across the horizon is unforgettable. The Cordillera Blanca ("white mountains"), contain some of the finest alpine trekking and climbing found in the world. Lying just ten degrees south of the equator, this glaciated, tropical range has over 40 peaks approaching 20,000 ft. The east side of the Blanca's feed the head waters of the Amazon River, while the west side is cut by many deep "U-shaped" glacial valleys. This is a land of beautiful turquoise lakes and high granite cliffs. The highest mountain in Peru, Nevado Huascaran (22,205') is found in the Cordillera Blanca, in the country's finest national park, Parque Nacional Huascaran. We will be taking a six-day trek from Llanganuco to Santa Cruz deep into the Blancas. We will be passing by deep turquoise lakes, high granite wall and dozens of peaks up to 22,000 ft.
