Your Itinerary:

Day 1: Saturday, October 31

While our opening dinner is on Sunday, we recommend you consider the ease of adding an extra day to your journey. It'll give you a chance to start your vacation early with a massage, or yoga class, or an afternoon snooze. You could even lounge in the garden and sketch a Brown-Crowned Motmot, a Montezuma Oropendola, or Steely-Vented Hummingbird. You could call it, “Feathers in Costa Rica.”

Day 2: Sunday, November 1 - Travel Day and Opening Dinner

If you arrive Saturday, you'll have all day Sunday to enjoy the pleasure of this place. If you travel on Sunday, no worries, our opening session begins with a leisurely dinner at 7 pm. You'll have ample time to arrive. All meal are a healthful combination of home cooking, international recipes, and fresh organic fruits and vegetables served on the balcony.

Day 3: Monday, November 2

5:00 - 10:00 am Wake slowly. There's no hurry, no deadline, no phone ringing, no alarm clock. The birds will ease you slowly awake. After that, we encourage you to take a yoga class, get a massage, or sip your coffee and write. Breakfast is served from 8:00 - 9:30. Exciting conversations!
10:00 am - 12:30 pm Writing from the imaginative storm. By playing with movement, brainstorming, intuition, and improvisation, you'll explore how to craft your imaginative discoveries into form. Your stories, poems, and creative urges will come to life with energy, verve, and originality.
12:30 - 4:00 pm Lunch and free time to lounge, write, walk, talk, nap, and enjoy.
4:00 - 6:00 pm Your old floppy hat: Telling your big story. Should you tell your big story straight, or make fiction from it? How do you make it compelling? In this session, you'll learn new techniques that will deepen the exploration of your memories and then help you build stories out of what you find.
6:00 - until Dinner is served at 7:00 pm. Your evenings are reserved for spontaneous salon conversations, good jazz, a DVD movie, and the opportunity to stay up late or go to bed early.

Day 4: Tuesday, November 3

5:00 - 10:00 am Wake slowly. Your breakfast is served from 8:00 - 9:30. Exciting conversations!
10:00 am - 12:30 pm. Trust the moving hand: Building your form. Building a story is like building a house, messy at first, but when it's finished you can live in it. If improvisation generates the rough draft, then craft advances it. As you build your stories, you'll sharpen your revision skills and come across new crafting tools you can add to your writer's belt.
12:30 - 4:00 pm Lunch and free time to lounge, write, walk, talk, nap, and enjoy.
4:00 - 6:30 pm She did, really? Building characters. Character is the building block of story. People in action create plot. How do you create those people, make them interesting and individual? How do you make your reader care about them? You'll play with techniques for getting inside a character, and finding what it is that inspires a character to live and speak.
6:30 - until Dinner is served at 7:00 pm. Your evenings are reserved for spontaneous salon conversations, good jazz, a DVD movie, and the opportunity to stay up late or go to bed early.

Day 5: Wednesday, November 4

5:00 - 9:30 am Wake slowly. Your breakfast is served from 8:00 - 9:30. Exciting conversations!
9:30 am - 2:00 pm The potential of images: Field trip to the sea. With the sea so close, we must go down to it and see what we find. On this journey you'll discover and write about how the language of chaos in the natural world informs, instructs, and encourages the imaginative process. We'll have lunch near the sea. Afterwards, the afternoon is free.
6:00 - until Dinner is served at 7:00 pm. Your evenings are reserved for spontaneous salon conversations, good jazz, a DVD movie, and the opportunity to stay up late or go to bed early.

Day 6: Thursday, November 5

5:00 - 10:00 am Wake slowly. Your breakfast is served from 8-9:30. Exciting conversations!
10:00 am - 12:30 pm You said: Reading your work with style. Subtext, motivation, intention, and need play a big role when you're reading your own work. In this session, you'll learn rehearsal techniques that will connect you more deeply to the layers of your work. You'll discover how the presentation concept of “One Third Imagination, One Third Text, One Third Audience” can build an emotional fire between you and your listeners. Presentation confidence, that's what you'll build here.
12:30 - 4:00 pm Lunch and free time to lounge, write, walk, talk, nap, and enjoy.
4:00 - 6:00 pm He Said: Exploring dialogue and your authentic voice. When your characters come to life, what do you listen for? How do you find their authentic voices? Why does some dialogue sound natural and other wooden? You'll discover answers to these wide ranging questions while working with the same techniques actors use to understand their characters' subtexts, motivations, intentions, and needs.
6:00 - until Dinner is served at 7:00 pm. Your evenings are reserved for spontaneous salon conversations, good jazz, a DVD movie, and the opportunity to stay up late or go to bed early.

Day 7: Friday, November 6

5:00 - 10:00 am Wake slowly. Your breakfast is served from 8:00 - 9:30. Exciting conversations!
10:00 am - noon. Our last morning together. Imaginative storm conversation: Following your dream. In this final session, we'll review our time together and talk about where you can go from here. How you can keep your creative energy engaged. How to stay excited, engaged, and on track once you return home. And if we have time, we'll bounce around more conversation about imagination, creativity, art, writing, and the crazy business of life in general. Does it matter? You bet it does!
