The name Serengeti derives from the Maa language of the indigenous Maasai people. The Serengeti National Park lies on a high plateau between the Ngorongoro Highlands and reaches almost as far as Lake Victoria. Serengeti National Park is known as the best wildlife sanctuary in the world and has famed because of its documented films by BBC titled Planet Earth that shows endowment of African wildlife in the Savannah ecosystem. Serengeti is Tanzania’s second largest and most famous national park in the world. It covers an area of 14,763 sq km.
The tour will take you through the vast plains of open woodlands and ultimately wildlife. As enduring as the game-viewing is the liberating sense of space that characterizes the Serengeti Plains, stretching across sun burnt savannah to a shimmering golden horizon at the end of the earth. Yet, after the rains, this golden expanse of grass is transformed into an endless green carpet flecked with wildflowers. And there are also wooded hills and towering termite mounds, rivers lined with fig trees and acacia woodland stained orange by dust. Tour Itinerary: Day 1: Ngorongoro Crater After early breakfast your guide will pick you up in a land cruiser, with packed lunch drive to Ngorongoro Crater conservation Area for a full day game drive. Ngorongoro crater is located west of the Great Rift Valley which runs from the Red Sea to Lake Nyasa in southern Tanzania. It is the largest unbroken caldera in the world, the second largest extinct crater in the world, and today shelters the most beautiful wildlife haven left on earth with a spectacular concentration of wildlife and stunning views. The Crater is oval in shape, 300Sq. Km in area, 610m deep. There are 25,000 larger animals within the crater itself. This is undoubtedly the best place to see black rhino in Tanzania as well as prides of lion that include the magnificent black-maned males. All of the big five are seen - elephant, rhino, lion, leopard and buffalo. Other game includes: cheetah, hyena, zebra, warthog, impala, hartebeest, eland and lots of other members of the antelope family and smaller mammals of sorts. Birdlife includes: - Kori bustard, secretary bird, crested crane, marabou stock, goliath, heron, beautiful fish eagles, and thousands of colorful flamingoes. More than a 100 species of bird not found in the Serengeti have been found in the crater. Retire for dinner and overnight stay at Wildlife Lodge/ Sopa Lodge /Simba camp. Includes: (FB). Day 2: Ngorongoro-Serengeti National Park After breakfast and check out, with packed lunch, proceed to Serengeti via Olduvai Gorge. Here lie signs of the earliest man that date to two million years ago. Visitors will be given the most fascinating on-site interpretation of the gorge. Break off for picnic lunch after which you will proceed to the great plains of Serengeti, game viewing enroute. Dinner and overnight stay at Wildlife Lodge/ Sopa Lodge/ Seronera Campsite. Day 3: Serengeti (Northern Corridor) In the north and along the western corridor are mountain ranges of mainly volcanic origin. Two rivers flowing west usually contain water and there are a number of lakes, marshes, and waterholes. This area is known as the Northern Corridor, since it is the route by which the migration passes north to Jun/Jul and south from Oct/Nov the Maasai Mara in Kenya. Large herds of antelope of all sorts including: Patterson's eland, Klipspringer, Dikdik, impala, Zebra, gazelles, water, bush and reed buck, topi, kongoni, cotton's oribi, grey bush duiker, roan antelope buffalo, and wildebeest. Plus: lion, leopard, cheetah, hyena, bat eared fox, hunting dog and jackal. Smaller mammals: spring hare, porcupine, warthog, hyraxes, baboon, vervet monkey, colobus monkey, patas monkey, and mongooses. The most scenic and productive safari areas are generally around Lobo. Dinner and overnight stay at Wildlife Lodge/ Sopa Lodge/ Seronera Campsite. Day 4: Serengeti (Central and South) After breakfast go for a mid morning game drive and viewing in the Seronera valley. The presence of permanent water in the central Seronera valley ensures year round game-viewing. As well as good resident game, during the dry season and cheetahs are forced to come in off the plains and congregate in extremely high numbers as there is enough prey. Lunch break at you hotel/lodge/ campsite, then late afternoon head south where you will see endless plains as the name suggest in the native language and various game scattered all over. Larger mammals: giraffe, rhino, elephant, hippopotamus. Nearly 500 species of bird, including vultures, storks, ostrich. Reptiles: crocodiles, a number of species of snakes and lizards Day 5: Balloon flight Very early in the morning at 0630hrs, fly in a hot air balloon over the vast plains of the Serengeti. See the endless lines of wildebeest as they migrate across this huge expanse of wilderness. Watch the hippos scatter as the balloon drifts over the edge of the riverbank. You will have breath taking views form above as the game below scatter at the sight of the intruder.
