Day 1: Coming to Leon. You will be pre-booked in a traditional hotel in the heart of the town. We recommend that you visit Leon, a former Roman encampment, now a large town. The historic center is well preserved and worth visiting. Over the course of time, León became the capital of the kingdom in the Middle Ages; a historic enclave on the Pilgrim's Road to Santiago de Compostela. Not to miss: The Pulchra Leonina (the "Sistine Chapel" of Spanish architecture) and the old "Hospital de San Marcos". Town: Shops, ATM, all facilities. Accommodation: 3* hotel in an old 16th Century monastery and right inside the historical center, quite amazing!
Day 2: Leon To Villadangos del Paramo (5 h 45 m, 22 km). Leaving Leon, the urban area continues almost as far as Virgen del Camino (7 km). From this point onwards, however, it becomes more interesting as you follow the historical camino, along the Plateau of Leon. Town: Shops, ATM, all facilities. Accommodation: 1* hotel in the middle of the village. Includes: (B), (D).
Day 3: Villadangos del Paramo to Astorga (6.5 h, 26 km). You pass the famous "Puente de Orbigo" and leave behind the Plateau of Leon, which is now stepped due to the spread of the irrigation farming methods which have heavily influenced this region. The Leon Mountains can be seen up ahead and the end of this stage will bring you to Astorga, the capital of Margateria. Not to miss in Astorga: Episcopal palace, the cathedral, and the city walls. Town: ATM, shops. Accommodation:3* hotel right in the historic center, en-suite. Includes: (B), (D).
Day 4: Astorga to Rabanal del Camino (5 h, 19 km). Now totally immersed in the region, yet hardly noticing it, we gradually make our way up to the first foothills of the Leon Mountains. This part of the countryside is characterized by broom, oak trees and conifer plantations. Town: 1 Shop, couple of restaurants and bars. Accommodation: 1* hotel family run, an old Celtic house, in a fairytale village, unforgettable. Includes: (B), (D).
Day 5: Rabanal del Camino to Ponferrada (7.5 h, 32 km). One of the most rewarding days, passing through broom, heather and other plant species you will continue your ascent toward the famous "Mount Irago". At the pass on the mountain you will see the "Iron Cross", an age-old tradition, before making your way downwards to the wealthy area of Bierzo. Here we can split the day in two with: 24 km the first day and 8 km the second day. Accommodation is in a fabulous, new, very stylish chalet hotel in Molinaseca. Town: Shops, ATM, all facilities. Accommodation: 3* hotel 200 m from the historical center, en-suite. Includes: (B).
Day 6: Ponferrada, end of the walking holiday. After breakfast we bid you farewell. Includes: (B).
