Tour Itinerary:
Day 1: Upon arrival at the Kotoka International Airport, group will be met by a representative of Blastours for transfer to the hotel where they’ll have dinner. Overnight stay at the Afia Village Beach Resort.
Day 2: We start the tour with a visit to the Sakumo lagoon, a Ramsar site east of Accra will provide a chance to observe pied kingfishers, long-tailed cormorants, western reef egrets and great egrets, African spoonbill etc. A walk along the lake will likely reveal breeding Killitz’s plover and collared Pratincole, Yellow-throated Longclaw and African Quailfinch. Continue trip to Akosombo for a boat ride along the Volta River to view a wide variety of bedlife along the forested riverbanks. Spend the night at a Shai Hill Resort, Shai Hills
Day 3: Start the day with a visit to the Shai Resource Centre, home to troops of baboons, kobs and spectacular caves with large colonies of bats. The reserve is ideal for climbing and a paradise for birdwatchers. Bird life to be seen include the African Hobby, Grey Kestrel, Stone Partridge, Green and Violet Turacos, Senegal Parrot, Grey Hornbill, Swallow-tailed Bee-eater, Blue-breasted Roller, White-crowned Robin Chat and Croaking Cisticola. Make a lunch break at the Aburi Botanical Gardens. Continue trip to Kumasi. Spend the night at a Guest house in the Forest Reserve, Bobiri.
Day 4: Spend the morning at the Bobiri forest and Butterfly reserve, whose wide collection of birdlife include the Blue-spotted Wood-dove, Swamp Palm Bulbul, Yellowbill, Grey and Red-fronted Parrot, African Green Pigeon, Red-headed Malimbe etc. A walk through the forest trails, may Also allow the viewing of birds such as Red-billed Dwarf and White-crested Hornbills, Grey-crowned Negrofinch, Bronze-naped Pigeon. This forest is a treasure trove of birds and attracts Black and Red-chested Cuckoos. In the afternoon, we visit a lake to view birds like the African Finfoot, Giant and occasionally, Shining Blue Kingfisher. In the late afternoon, we visit the Bomfobiri Wildlife Sanctuary and its waterfalls. This sanctuary created in 1975 is inhabited by 3 types of crocodiles, monkeys, duikers and a rich bird life. Spend the night at a Guest house in the Forest Reserve, Bobiri.
Day 5: In the early morning, we visit the Owabi Wildlife Sanctuary, the only inland Ramsar Convention site in the country and home to many butterflies, over 161species of birds including migratory birds. Continue trip to the Mole National park, which covers an area of about 4840km2 of savannah and rocky outcrops. This forest provides the opportunity to see much of Ghana’s indigenous plant life, as well as rare butterflies, birds and other forms of wildlife. There are 269 bird species whose presence have been confirmed at this park, plus an additional 56 species on the hypothetical list. This includes Red-throated Bee-eater, Grey Woodpecker, Beautiful and Pygmy Sunbirds, Orange-cheeked, Lavender and Black-rumped Waxbills, Senegal Batis, Hadada Ibis, Woolly-necked Stork, Senegal Thick-knee and Greater-painted Snipe, etc., etc. Spend the night at the Mole Motel, Damongo.
Day 6: Early start by watching the dawn activity from the lodge terrace and a later walk into the bush with a park guide. Birds of prey like White-backed Vulture, African Hawk-eagle, Bateleur, Martial Eagles, Ayres’s Hawk-eagle are common and with luck, White-headed Vulture will be seen. Also see animals like the elk, monkeys, baboons, warthogs. A close up view of elephants is the norm. Continue with a late afternoon viewing will include passerines of interest like the Familiar Chat,White-fronted Black Chat, Northern Black Flycatcher, White-shouldered Black Tit, Senegal Eremomela and Cinnamon-breasted Bunting. Spend the rest of the afternoon at the poolside. Spend the night at the Mole Motel, Damongo.
Day 7: Return to Kumasi with a stopover at the Boabeng Fiema Monkey Sanctuary, where Mona and black and white Colobus monkeys are considered to be a significant part of the community. A walk through the forest also provides viewing of a variety of butterflies, birds, and over 90 identified species of trees. Continue trip to Lake Bosumtwi, a crater lake believed to have been created by a fallen meteorite. Spend the night on the banks of Lake Bosumtwi.
Day 8: At 28 km square Lake Bosomtwi is Ghana 's largest natural lake and also the deepest at about 100m is ideal for hiking and bird watching. Trek through paths to fishing villages that surrounds revealing the cultural practices of the villages in the hinterland. Experience an optional canoe ride on the lake. *It is a taboo to use power boats on the lake. Continue trip the Central Region through Assin Manso. As we progress southwards we may encounter Lizard Buzzard, Gabar Goshawk, Broad-billed and Blue- breasted Rollers. Overnight stay at the Kokodo Guest House, Cape Coast.
Day 9: Early morning visit to the Kakum National park gives an excellent walking tour on the canopy walkway also the longest and highest of its kind in the West Africa. Viewing amongst others will include Splendid Glossy Starling, Bates’s Sunbird, Buff-spotted Woodpecker, Vieillot’s Black Weaver, Pale- fronted Negro-finch, Maxwell’s Black Weaver, Superb Sunbird and Grey Longbill, Yellowbill, Speckled Tinkerbird, and African Harrier-Hawks. The park is also famous for the presence of Black Bee-eater, Red-fronted Parrot, Green-backed Camaroptera, Superb Sunbird, Bar-breasted and Red-billed Firefinch and Black-necked Weaver. Also visit the Hans Botel, a resort partly built on stilts on a river with lots of bird life, crocodiles and monkeys. The river passing through this resort nests over a hundred species of birdlife including Shikra, Bronze & Magpie Mannikin, Vieillot’s Black & Orange Weaver, Green-headed Sunbird, Pied & Malachite Kingfisher, Common Sandpiper, African Jacana and Lesser-striped Swallow, nesting Village Weavers and roosting Long-tailed Cormorant and Cattle Egrets. Return to Accra after lunch for a departure. (No overnight stay)
