Day 1 - Arrival in Barcelona Welcome to Barcelona! Check into your five-star luxury hotel in Barcelona’s city center, then meet for lunch at a top Bistronomic restaurant. These Bistronomic restaurants are making news for their market-driven contemporary approach to Catalan cuisine, and many appear in the 2011 Michelin guide. Take a private guided walking tour through the Modernist District, stopping by architect Antoni Gaudi’s most famous buildings. Enjoy a private minibus up to the hilltop overlooking Barcelona to visit Gaudi’s Parc Guell and take in the unforgettable view of the city. As the sun sets, gather on the seaside terrace of a traditional Catalan rice and seafood restaurant in the former fisherman’s district of La Barceloneta, where the owner, Enrique, will hand-select the wines to accompany dinner. Day 2 - Barcelona Tour Barcelona’s famous Boqueria Market, guided by a culinary expert who will highlight the market’s stellar seafood and charcuterie selections. Explore the astounding variety of ingredients available to Spanish chefs, many of whom come to the market in the morning to eat breakfast at market bars such as Pinotxo or Quim de la Boqueria, famous for their market fresh cuisine. After the market visit, take a gourmet walking tour through the Gothic quarter, stopping in specialty food shops for tastings of Catalan cheese, charcuterie, pastries, and even artisanal candy. Meet for lunch in an avant-garde tapas restaurant to experience this quintessential Spanish cuisine. Afterward, delight in a chocolate-making demonstration and tasting with a Catalan chocolatier whose shops are found in Barcelona, Tokyo and New York. Dinner on your own in a recommended restaurant or tapas bar. Day 3 - Priorat Today, transfer to the Priorat, the hidden-gem wine region of Spain. The spectacularly mountainous Priorat is famed for deep red wines favored by Robert Parker. A specialist on the Priorat wine region will lead a tour of many special wineries during your time here, including some of the region’s top wineries, and one little-known “garage” winery. The wine tastings will be guided by the winery owners, and will allow plenty of time to appreciate the wine while discussing the business and art of winemaking with the cellar owners. The owners and winemakers will join the tour and share their expertise and wine-making philosophies while visitors enjoy private tastings. A delicious lunch, accompanied by the cellar’s wines, awaits in Clos de l’Obac Winery’s contemporary eatery, which is considered the region’s finest restaurant. After lunch, walk through the Cartoixa d’Escaladei, first Carthusian Priory of the Iberian Peninsula, now in ruins. Close to the Monastery is the winery Cellers d’Escaladei, which is located in the ancient town of Scala Dei, where the ruins of the famous monastery still stand. Hear about its long tradition of winemaking, renewed in recent decades as part of the Priorat revival, and enjoy a private tour and wine tasting. Traditional tapas dinner in the charming village hotel. Day 4 - Priorat Next, enjoy a visit and tasting at Cims de Porrera winery in Porrera. This old village, in very steep and rugged terrain, is home to a vineyard founded by the Pérez family, one of the pioneering wine families who rediscovered the Priorat region in the late 80s. Stroll around the village, with time to see its famous sundials. After departing Porrera, visit the Mas Perinet winery, which stands in old wine land where almonds and olives have long grown. After a delicious lunch, visit the village of La Vilella Baixa, known as the New York of the Priorat because of its tall buildings that tower over the surroundings. There will be time to visit artisanal sausage makers and plenty of gourmet shops before an introduction to local olive oils at a specialist shop at Escaladei, where guests will enjoy an olive oil tasting of single estate Arbequina oils from the region, prized by chefs throughout the world for their light, fruity flavor. Dinner at a renowned modern cuisine restaurant. Day 5 - Penedés – Barcelona This morning, visit the famed wine region of Penedés, home to Spain-s famed Cava, or sparkling wine. Visit two artisanal producers and taste the different styles of Cavas. After a traditional lunch in the Penedés region, head to Barcelona for a farewell dinner. Day 6 - Barcelona Private transfer to the Barcelona airport for the return journey home. Notes: The trip price is based on the included services and the number of people traveling.
