Tour Itinerary:
Day 1: Arrival in Bamako. Your international flight arrives in Bamako; on arrival you will be warmly welcomed and driven to your hotel. The remainder of your day is at leisure to relax and acclimatize to your new surroundings. Overnight in Bamako. Grand Hotel or Similar
Days 2: Bamako - Segou (235 km) - Mopti (405 km). Begin your discovery journey through Mali: After breakfast, drive to and visit Segou, Mali's former colonial capital; stroll through the pottery market on the waterfront; in the afternoon, continue to Mopti for overnight. Hotel Kanaga or Similar. Includes: (B).
Day 3: Mopti - Djenne (130 km) - Mopti / Niger River. City tour of Mopti, also called "the Venice of Mali"; see the Komoguel mosque, the fishing port (see pirogues being made), and the bustling market where many of Mali's ethnic groups come to trade: Bambara, Bobo, Bozo, Dogon, Fulani, Tuareg and Songhay; excursion to Djenne, ancient sister-city of Timbuktu, on its colorful weekly market day; see the magnificent Great Mosque, the world's largest mud brick architecture, one of Unesco's World Heritage sites; return to Mopti for a relaxing sunset sail on the Niger River; overnight. Day 4: Mopti - Timbuktu (550 km). Onward to the legendary city of Timbuktu, gateway to the Sahara Desert (6-hour drive); overnight in Timbuktu. Hotel Hendrina Khan or Similar. Includes: (B).
Day 5: Timbuktu - Sahara Desert. Visit the legendary city of Timbuktu, gateway to the Sahara Desert: see the ancient mosques and former universities, the museum and Ahmed Baba Institute archives of ancient Islamic manuscripts, the explorers' houses, and the market which receives the azalas, the salt caravans from the desert; in the afternoon, depart on your camel caravan into the desert to visit a Tuareg camp; the Tuareg people are known as the Princes of the desert; return to Timbuktu for overnight. Day 6: Timbuktu - Dogon country (650 km). 8-hour drive across the Sahel, to Mali's fascinating Dogon country; lunch break and sightseeing en-route; overnight in Sangha. Hotel Campement Guina or Similar. Includes: (B), (D).
Day 7: Dogon country. Visit Dogon villages along the Bandiagara escarpment; you will see many examples of the classic traditional Dogon architecture and contemporary fetishism; option to witness a traditional Dogon mask dance; overnight in Sangha. Day 8: Dogon country - Segou (525 km). Visit the Dogon village Songo, renowned for its circumcision grotto and rock paintings; and return drive to Segou for overnight. Hotel Independence or Similar. Includes: (B).
Day 9: Segou - Bamako (235 km) - Final Departure. Return drive to Bamako; city tour of Bamako: visit the National Museum, the city market, the artisans' village, the fetish market for traditional medicine; in the evening, transfer to the airport for your onward international flight. Includes: (B).
