On this photography vacation/worshop you will have the opportunity under expert instruction to enhance your skills for capturing water, snow, mountains, and ice in photographic balance, while visiting the stunning beauty of the largest fresh-water lake in Briitish Columbia, Atlin Lake. With the use of our custom 34-foot support vessel "The Yukon Rose" we will explore the mountains, glaciers and aqua blue bays that make this lake famous and bring home a treasure trove of sensational northern images. We will camp each night on the shores of this stunning lake admist the coastal mountains in comfortable large tents with sleeping cots that keep us off the ground and many other camp luxuries!

Tour Itinerary:

Day 0: Whitehorse, Yukon. Hopefully you enjoyed your travels and have arrived safely in Whitehorse, the Yukon’s capital city, nestled among the wilderness. Please arrive in Whitehorse in time for an orientation meeting at 8:30 pm the night before our departure. Guests are responsible for accommodation and meals while in Whitehorse. Whitehorse is a splendid little city and we recommend booking some additional time at either the beginning or the end of your trip to see Whitehorse.

Day 1: Our staff will pick you up from your hotels starting at 7:00 am. Participants need to have finished their breakfast by this time. Any final details will be dealt with and we will depart by 8:00 am. We will travel southeast along the Alaska Highway out of Whitehorse for an hour, and then turn south on the Atlin Road, crossing into Northern British Columbia on our way towards Atlin. Our route will afford us views of White Mountain, and the north end of Atlin Lake, and this road is particularliy good for spotting bears. After arriving in Atlin by late morning, we will have the remainder of the day to photograph this highly scenic and colourful community on the shores of stunningly beautiful mountain-lined lake. Your instructor will teach you all the techniques necessary to capture these northern pastoral and quaint rural images. Accommodation that night willl be at a local hotel. (Dinner not included) In the evening we will have a viewing of images taken during the day, so that we can see each other’s work and learn collectively. Includes: (L).

Day 2: After breakfast at the hotel we will launch our custom 34-foot support vessel, “The Yukon Rose”, upon the waters of majestic Atlin Lake, and begin a voyage south towards the Llewellyn Glacier. Your instructor will teach techniques for shooting images over water and dealing with reflection and refraction. As we travel south the scenery goes from gorgeous to spectacular. The water becomes aqua-teal, due to fine glacial sediment suspended in the water, and the reflection of light this causes. The mountains become more snowcapped and rugged and we enter an area of islands and inlets that create unlimited photographic potential. We will set a comfortable camp on the southern islands of Atlin Lake and enjoy the long evening light famous in the north. With the use of our support vessel, we will be able to view our images from the day and see how our first images of Atlin turned out. Includes: (B), (L), (D).

Day 3: After a delicious breakfast over the fire, we will launch “The Yukon Rose” traveling to the far west arm of Atlin Lake, known as Willison Bay, at the southern terminus of Torres Channel. This bay affords us stunning views of hanging glaciers, high in the mountain peaks. We will spend the day exploring this section of the lake, further enhancing our knowledge of how to manage light/ water /snow and earth, and bring these elements together in balance for beautiful images. We will enjoy a floating dinner on the vessel, and then cruise back to our campsite for another comfortable sleep. Includes: (B), (L), (D).

Day 4: Today we head south by vessel from our island home, into Llewellyn Inlet, and embark on a hiking trip to Llewellyn Glacier. This (optional) hiking trip travels across relatively flat terrain a distance of 6 km (3-4 hours hike each way) to the toe of the Llewellyn Glacier. Here you will have opportunity to shoot floating icebergs, melt-water ice sculptures, glacial blue ice, dark verdant vegetations and amber-hued soils. Return to “The Yukon Rose” by late afternoon and shuttle back to our base-camp for the evening. Includes: (B), (L), (D).

There is an overnight camping option at the toe of the glacier. This requires participants to be able to travel with a 60-75 lb packs. We will likely share tri-pods and certain lenses in order to keep our equipment weight down. We will stay camp overnight at the foot of the glacier, shooting near the glacier through a full cycle of light. In the evening or the following morning, an optional hike up the ridge will yield full views out over the Llewellyn Glacier, as it winds its way higher into the coastal mountains, eventually to merge with the enormous Juneau Ice field, one of the largest sub-polar masses of ice in North America.

Day 5: Today we will awake either at our base-camp on the island or tucked in tight against the toe of the glacier. An early morning session of shooting the toe of the glacier or a hike higher to view the full immensity of the glacier might await those that have camped over night at the glacier, and those that have returned to base camp will enjoy a morning of exploration by boat of Sloko Inlet, to the extreme southern terminus of the Atlin Lake. After lunch we will rendez-vous in Llewellyn Inlet with the glacier hikers, returning to our base-camp for our final night of camping, camaraderie, and delicious food. An evening slide show awaits us as we share our images and stories with each other. Includes: (B), (L), (D).

Day 6: Today our time on Atlin Lake is drawing to and end. After an early breakfast, we will take down our camp, pack “The Yukon Rose” and begin our journey northward to the community of Atlin Lake, grabbing that last picture of a caribou standing on the shore, or the perfect reflection in a pool of aqua-blue water. We will have about a 4-5 hour cruise, enjoying lunch as we travel returning to Atlin by mid-afternoon. We will return you to your hotels in Whitehorse by approximately 7:00 pm. Dinner and hotel not included in Whitehorse. Includes: (B), (L).

Note: Please discuss with our office staff your preferences for the 4th day when booking your space. To the best of our abilities we will accommodate the preferences of those on the trip.
