Tour Itinerary:
Day 1: Arrival in Guadalajara-Afternoon transfer to hotel. Join us for a welcome drink and a salsa demonstration. Overnight in Guadalajara.
Day 2: This morning we will go to Tonala, the craft manufacturing center of Guadalajara, to visit craftsman in their studio/homes with the opportunity to buy directly from them. We will spend the afternoon at the weekly craft fair in Tonala-the largest outdoor fair in Mexico, a tradition dating back hundreds of years. Overnight in Guadalajara. Includes: (B).
Day 3: Today we travel to Lake Chapala, one of the most beautiful villages in Mexico to meet and buy from Master Artists from all over Mexico at the annual Feria Maestros del Arte. Many of these artists were featured in the acclaimed book, “Great Masters of Mexican Folk Art”. The artists represent the best in clay, paper, fabric, paint, wood, stone, silver, and alpacca. Overnight in Guadalajara. Includes: (B).
Day 4: This morning join us on a tour of Guadalajara’s historic center. Founded in 1542, Guadalajara is Mexico’s 2nd largest city and the birthplace of Mariachi. Some sights included are the Cathedral, Mercado Libertad, with over 1000 vendors making it the largest indoor market in Latin America, City Hall, and the Cabanas Cultural Institute with Orozco’s famous murals. Afternoon departure for Puerto Vallarta. Overnight in Puerto Vallarta for next 7 nights. If you are joining us for the Puerto Vallarta 8 day/7 night trip, we will meet you at the hotel this evening. Includes: (B).
Day 5: Take today to relax at the beach or pool. If relaxing isn’t your style, join in water aerobics, salsa lessons or pool volleyball. Or opt to go to Terra Noble, a mountain top spa overlooking the city, where you can indulge in many types of spa treatments or participate in a painting or clay workshop. Late afternoon walk to the Malecon, the boardwalk, where families go on Sunday to people watch, listen to music, see jugglers, and view the enormous sand sculptures. Then we’ll go to Old Town to dine at one of the restaurants participating in the annual Gourmet Festival held every November. Includes: (D).
Day 6: Join award winning photographer, Michele McDonald, in a photo jaunt around the Romantic Zone. Michele is a freelance photographer, formerly on staff at the Boston Globe. She was a finalist for both the Pulitzer Prize and the Robert F. Kennedy Photojournalism Award. She was also awarded the prestigious Nieman Fellowship from Harvard University. During this tour you will become more familiar with the Old Town, and will have the opportunity to photograph some local people, such as a 91 year old couple who have been making and selling pinatas together for over 60 years. Bring your cameras and learn valuable photo tips. Michele will evaluate your photographs this evening and give you helpful pointers.
Day 7: This morning join us on an oceanfront Sculpture Walk learning about the original sculptures along the Malecon for which Puerto Vallarta is famous. Remainder of the day at your leisure. Explore the Flea Market located in the center of town on an island in the Rio Cuale, relax by the pool or take a walk along the beach or do nothing at all.
Day 8: Today we will take a morning tour of Puerto Vallarta. Tonight we go on an Art Walk in Old Town, featuring 16 art galleries, with wine, beer, and some of the featured artists present.
Day 9: Today we’ll take the local bus to Boca de Tomatlan, a quaint fishing village, and catch a water taxi to Yelapa. Yelapa is a town, inaccessible by road, which just recently got electricity. Explore the town which has no cars, lounge on a chaise on the beautiful crescent shaped beach, get a slice of pie from the Pie Ladies-who walk the beach selling fresh coconut, chocolate, pecan, cheese, banana and lemon pies. Tonight we’ll attend a Mexican Fiesta complete with mariachis and fireworks. Includes: (D).
Day 10: Day at leisure. We can arrange an optional trip for you to go to San Sebastian del Oeste, an UNESCO World Heritage site, located in the Sierra Madres. It is an old silver mining town, which in its heyday had a population of over 40,000. Today, it has 600 people. You can visit the church dedicated to San Sebastian, sample organic coffee, grown locally by 5th generation coffee growers, and admire the wonderful architecture.
