Day 1: After an early breakfast, drive to Machame gate for official registration. Walk through shambas, then forest for about five to six hours to the Machame hut (3000 m).
Day 2: After breakfast, continue along the steep ridge going on to rock ridges and through heather. The route turns west into a river gorge. It takes about five hours reaching Shira hut (3800 m).
Day 3: We continue our ascending to the east, towards Kibo, passing the junction. Then continue walking east towards the Lava Tower and shortly after this, you descend. It takes about four hours to get to Barranco hut (3940 m).
Day 4: Early in the morning take a short scramble to the top of the Great Barranco and then traverse over scree and ridges for about three hours to the Karanga Valley (4000 m), beneath the ice falls of the Heim, Kersten and Decken Glaciers. After climbing out of the Karanga Valley the trail ascends a ridge for about three hours to the Barafu Hut - a bleak location with little vegetation at 4600 m.
Day 5: An early start for the ascent to the rim of the Kibo Crater between the Rebmann and Ratzel Glaciers for about four hours. From here a further hour leads to Uhuru Peak, from where there are often fine views of Meru to the west and the jagged peak of Mawenzi to the east. Descend to Barafu Hut for a rest and lunch before continuing down on to camp at Mweka Hut in the giant heather zone on the forest edge.
Day 6: After breakfast, walk for about three to four hours and descent through beautiful forest, which brings you to the Park gate and your waiting transport. Drive back to the hotel. End of the service.
- Accommodation is in tents you will need a sleeping bag and a sleeping mat.
- An extra day could be added to the itinerary, spent either at Shira, where you could walk to the Shira Needles, or camping in the Karanga Valley.
