A cycling tour that starts from the city of Bordeaux and winds its way into the Entre Deux Mers region taking in little bastide town at Creon and ancient pilgrimage way points such as La Sauve. Continuing along quiet country lanes the route reaches Cadillac with its Ducal palace and town walls before heading to St Croix de Mont with its splendid views over the Garonne plain and oyster-shell grottos. From here it is a swift descent to Verdelais the last resting place of Toulouse Lautrec whose family home at Chateau Malrome is only a few kms away.
Also only a few km distant is St Macaire where you not only enjoy a 3 star hotel but its plunge/ whirlpool where you can soak the tiredness out of weary legs. The following day, you cross the Garonne to head towards Bazas - a town that time forgot with its ancient cathedral and 2500 years of history; or Roquetaillarde a fortress chateau which has been retained by the same family for 800 years. Joining a dedicated cycle track through the Gascon forest brings you to Villandraut where you are welcomed by your hosts at Chateau Madeleine. Staying a second night at the chateau allows you a choice of activity (or inactivity) the next day. You could take a trip down to Prechac and on to visit the royal palace at Cazeneuve; take in Uzeste with its church dedicated to the first Avignon Pope Clemente V; or for something very different take to the water with a paddle and canoe the Ciron. Alternatively you could relax by your host's swimming pool and do nothing more arduous than think hard about your choice of evening meal. The following day your route takes you down the Ciron into the verdant Sauternes landscape. You may stop off at the village for a little degustation or continue to Chateau Malle to see inside a rather grand mansion. At days end you jump on a train to return to Bordeaux. In Bordeaux you again have choices of exploring the many facets of this elegant city or taking a train ride down to the seaside at Arcachon. There you can cycle the coastline, visit the lighthouse, enjoy the beach, dine on local oysters and white wine or attempt to scale the Dune de Pyla. The final evening in Bordeaux will be a chance to reflect on your cycling adventure and enjoy a last taste of great French cuisine.
