If you’d prefer more or less time in either the Selous or Zanzibar, or have alternative accommodation in mind, contact us for a tailored quote. Our Selous Safari and Zanzibar holiday departs daily throughout the year except during the long rains of April and May when lodges in the Selous close. Operating on a private departure basis with a minimum of 2 people you can enjoy an exclusive Selous Safari and Zanzibar Beach holiday experience. Tour Itinerary: Day 1: Arrive Dar es Salaam; short flight into Selous Game Reserve. Your safari starts with an exciting short flight aboard a light aircraft into the north-eastern part of Selous Game Reserve. You’ll get a bird’s eye view of the lush wilderness and wetlands of the Rufiji River before landing in Africa’s largest Game Reserve. You will be greeted by staff from the lodge, and transferred by vehicle (approx. 30 minutes) to the Mivumo River Lodge, set in an exclusive location on the north bank of the river near Steigler's Gorge. Here you’ll spend your nights in superior river-facing suites equipped with an indoor bathroom, outdoor shower and an intimate plunge pool. In the afternoon head out on your first game viewing activity – either a leisurely boat safari along the mighty Rufiji River or a game drive, depending on your preference. Accommodation: Mivumo River Lodge. Includeds: (L, D). Days 2-4: Choice of game viewing activities in the Selous. During your next three days in the Selous you’ll enjoy a variety of game viewing experiences with a choice of boat, foot or vehicle-based activities available. You can arrange your final schedule with camp staff but a typical day includes a morning game viewing activity followed by lunch back at camp (and a siesta!), then a late afternoon activity, sundowner and dinner. Nature walks and fishing trips are also possible from the lodge. On each activity you’ll be accompanied by a highly experienced game ranger/guide. Game drives are extremely popular and typically last for a half day, however full day safaris can be arranged locally and will take you deeper into the Reserve. From the Sand River and Selous' Grave to Lake Tagalala and hot volcanic springs, the destinations within the Selous are quite varied. Final game drive routes and timings depend on the wildlife encountered and the specific interests of guests. Accommodation: Mivumo River Lodge. Includes: (B, L, D). Day 5: Fly to Zanzibar Island; transfer to Matemwe. An hour flight from the Selous will take you to Zanzibar airport where you will be met and transferred to Matemwe on the north-east coast. Boasting the most idyllic beaches, and with the adjacent Mnemba Atoll offering spectacular diving and snorkeling, Matemwe is a real paradise. Matemwe’s exclusive location, away from the big hotels, gives the beach a very private feel with fleets of fishermen in traditional wooden dhows a more common site than hordes of sun-worshipers. Matemwe is an intimate lodge with just twelve luxury suites perched on a coral rock, surrounded by glorious beaches. The friendly staff, relaxed atmosphere and excellent cuisine are renowned on the island. Accommodation: Matemwe. Includes: (B, L, D). Days 6-7: At leisure at Matemwe; optional dhow trip, snorkeling or diving. Depending on your personal interests there are a range of activities and excursions available at Matemwe. Although Matemwe does not have its own diving school it does work with a reliable dive operator that can collect Matemwe’s guests every day. Diving and snorkeling conditions are excellent in the Marine Park around the nearby Mnemba Atoll. Snorkeling can be done from the beach or on a trip with Matemwe’s own wooden dhow boats. Guided reef and village walks, dhow boat trips, kayaking and cycling are also available. Accommodation: Matemwe. Includes: (B, L, D). Land based excursions from Matemwe include: - An hour drive will take you from Matemwe to Stone Town so an excursion to Zanzibar’s historic World Heritage capital is a popular trip. - No trip to the island is considered complete without a visit to a spice plantation on a spice tour. Awaken your senses with a blend of intoxicating smells, textures and tastes – from the refreshing succulence of green coconut flesh to the hot punch of a chili. - If you fancy a close encounter with one of the island’s celebrated species, a visit to Jozani Forest will reveal playful Red Colobus monkeys and one of the last protected tracts of truly indigenous forest. Note: Alternatively just spend some lazy days lounging by the pool, on the beach or in a hammock. Day 8: Fly to Dar es Salaam where holiday ends. Your Specialist Tanzania holiday ends today after check-out from your accommodation and a short flight to Dar es Salaam airport. Includes: (B). Notes: Price Includes:
