Turkey is an open air museum of untouched ancient cities and sites. There are around 70 ancient sites around the Lycia region in the south west Turkey offering us a mythical experience, enjoying the history, culture and nature of the region. Our tour leaders will share with you their vast knowledge about the archaeology, history, culture and geography of the region.
Homer mentioned the Lycians’ passion for freedom. The cities founded by these brave people formed first federal state system in the history. We will explore some of the biggest settlements of the region, including Xanthos and Letoon of the World Culture Heritage list of UNESCO, while enjoying the beautiful nature of the Taurus Mountains and the Mediterranean.
Day 1: Antalya and Kas. Arrival to Turkey, Antalya Int. Airport. Transfer to Kas. Overnight in Kas.
Day 2: Breakfast at the hotel. The first stops of the expedition are the magnificent ancient ruins of Letoon and Xanthos. We will have lunch at a local restaurant. After lunch we head to one of the most beautiful beaches of the region to relax, the Kaputas beach. In the afternoon we come back to Kas. We have a few hours of free time in the Kas city center or at the hotel before we take our dinner at a fish restaurant to taste some fresh seafood.
Day 3: Breakfast at the hotel. We will visit the ancient city of Patara, The biggest port and commercial city of the Lycian League. After our visit to the ancient city we will have lunch at a restaurant near Patara. Our next stop is the Patara beach by the ancient city, famous as the birth-giving place for the “carreta carreta” turtles. In the late afternoon, we will come back to Kas and have dinner in Kas.
Day 4: Breakfast at the hotel. We will go on a scuba diving, underwater-archaeology boat trip¹² around Kas. Kas is the best place for scuba diving along the Turkish Mediterranean coast. Lunch will be served during the boat trip. We will be in Kas in the late afternoon. Dinner will be taken at a local restaurant in the Kas Bazaar.
- If you do not prefer to attend this tour for any reason, you may choose to visit the ancient ruins of Phellos and Antiphellos
- This tour contains scuba diving. Even if you have never done scuba diving before you may be able to see some remains of ancient shipwrecks such as amphorae, during the discovery dive.
Day 5: Breakfast at the hotel. We will visit Kekova, the sunken city and less known but a magnificent ancient site that used to be a pirate port, Aperlai. To explore these sites we will take a full day boat trip, so there will be numerous occasions to swim. Lunch will be taken during the boat trip. When we get off the boat in the afternoon, we will make a short visit to another interesting ancient settlement, Simena. Dinner will be at a fish restaurant in Kas. We will be leaving Kas next morning
Day 6: Breakfast at the hotel. Departure from our hotel in Kas. We will drive to Demre to visit the ancient city of Myra and the Church of St. Nicholas, known as the “Wonder maker”, who had been the bishop of Myra. We will have lunch at a local restaurant near Demre. After lunch we will head north to the slopes of Taurus Mountains and to a mystical ancient city, Arycanda. We will drive to Antalya to spend the night.
Day 7: Breakfast at the hotel. We will a half-day tour of Antalya’s Castle District, during which we will able to see many historical monuments such as the “Hadrian’s Gate and Yivli Minare (the fluted minaret) Mosque. After we have lunch at a local restaurant in the Castle District we will drive east to visit to magnificent Pamphylian ancient cities Aspendos and Perge. Aspendos has the best preserved Roman Theatre in the world. Perge was the metropolis of the Pamphylian Region and the splendor of the city is still visible to naked eye. On our way back to Antalya we will have short stop to swim at Lara beach. We will have dinner at an authentic Turkish restaurant in the Castle District.
Day 8: Breakfast at the hotel. Transfer to the Antalya Int. Airport.
