The picturesque village of Deir El Qamar was the residence of the Ottoman-appointed governors of Lebanon at the beginning of the 16th Century with Emir Fakhreddine II till the 18th Century, when Emir Bechir II Chehab moved the capital to Beiteddine. Visit Fakhreddine’s Mosque. The Chouf Mountains are wild and beautiful, peppered with small villages and terraced for easy cultivation. Olives, apples and grapes are fed by numerous springs and wells. Several rivers divide the land into steep canyons. At the outskirts of Deir El Qamar, visit Moussa Castle, a child dream that became a reality. Head towards Beiteddine Emir Bechir’s 18th century Palace and summer residence of the President of Lebanon.
Admire its decorated ceilings, its world’s finest collection of Byzantine Mosaics, Harem Suites and groomed gardens (closed on Mondays). Proceed towards Barouk, a stunning summer town with abundant springs. Barouk and Maaser El-Chouf forests have the largest number of Ancient Lebanese Cedars (cedrus Libani) – some are thought to be aged 2000 years. It is estimated that species of 200 Birds and 26 wild mammals either live in or pass through the area. Historically, the village is known for being the "land of good", because of its fountain (Nabeh-el-Barouk) that stands 1943 m above sea level. Notes:
