Day 1: Depart for Fort Portal. After breakfast, you’ll begin your journey from Kampala to the west of Uganda through Mubende. We’ll have lunch en-route then drive through the breathtaking scenery and delightfully rolling tea plantations. Dinner and overnight at Mountains of the Moon Hotel/Ruwenzori View Guesthouse.
Day 2: Primate and Chimp Tracking. Another very early departure - but well worth it! We’re on our way to Kibale Forest with its enormous number of primates and its families of habituated chimpanzees. Kibale is home to an astonishing 12 species of primates. We’ll have a guided forest walk, as we look out for chimps, red, white, and black Columbus, grey-cheeked mangabey monkeys and many more. There is at least 325 species of birds, and over 144 species of butterfly. Kibale with its ancient trees up to 55 meters in height is a wonderful place to experience the extraordinary diversity of life in a tropical rainforest first hand. Dinner and overnight at Kibale Primate Lodge/Kibale Forest Camp/Chimp’s Nest.
Day 3: Nature Walk. After an early breakfast, we’ll leave for a guided walk at Magombe Swamp where we’ll be able to spot monkeys, exotic birds and butterflies. Enjoy a picnic lunch and a leisurely afternoon. Dinner and overnight at Kibale Primate Lodge/Kibale Forest Camp/Chimp’s Nest.
Day 4: Depart for Semliki Valley, Visit a Local Farm and a Picnic by the Hot Water Springs. After an early morning breakfast, we depart for Semliki Valley. This valley is known as the “Garden of Eden” and has a magnificent view of the river Semliki meandering to Lake Albert. We’ll stop to visit a local farmer and have a tour of his farm then take a picnic lunch at the hot water springs. We’ll spend the afternoon taking a forest walk in the tropical rainforest. Dinner and overnight at Semliki Safari Lodge.
Day 5: Cultural Visits. After breakfast, we’ll experience a day of real discovery. We’ll visit a local community in the foothills of the Rwenzoris. After touring the area, we’ll visit the local witch doctor at his home, take a leisurely lunch while being entertained by the local (Bakonjo and Batoro) dancers. We will also visit a local women’s group that makes crafts, with revenues from the sales supporting the community. Dinner and overnight at Semliki Safari Lodge.
Day 6: Depart for Kampala. After an early breakfast, depart for Kampala. En-route we will have a stopover lunch at the equator where we will enjoy a small demonstration on the different hemispheres across the equator. We should arrive in Kampala in the evening.
