Pindar area is in the South Eastern flank of the Nanda Devi Mountain, a natural sanctuary, which despite many attempts could be entered by none until 1934 and was once considered impenetrable. Even today, visitors are banned in the inner Sanctuary!
For its ease of access, one of the most visited glaciers in Uttrakhand is the Pindari Glacier. The place gives a view of the Pindari Ice Fall, Lamchir East peak and the Changuch Mountain. The top of Pindari Icefall leads to Traill’s Pass, named after the first British Commissioner of Garhwal, G. W. Traill, who made one of the earliest attempts to enter the inner sanctuary in 1830. Alternate Route to Pindari Glacier - The Itinerary The usual route to Pindari until Khati village, this being a junction point for Sunderdhunga Valley, Pindar Valley and Kafni Valley, gets overly crowded in summers. For this reason, we are suggesting an alternate and more doable route to Pindari Glacier. Plus, as this route plan saves on hiking days, we will be covering more ground to reach the Advance Base Camp of the Nanda Bhanar Mountain from where the views, on a clear day, are unimaginable! Day 01: Binsar – Dhur Driving – 6 hrs, 150 km After having breakfast leave Binsar around 9 am, lunch en route. ETA Dhur 4 pm. Setup camp at Dhur. Day 02: Dhur – Camp midway en route Dwali Trekking – 7 km, 4 hrs Our hike starts at Dhur. The aim today is to start acclimatizing and tuning ourselves to the high altitude environment. Day 05: Phurkia – Base Camp Trekking – 10 km, 7 hrs This is our first big walk. The trek from Phurkia to Zero Point of Pindari Glacier is visually captivating and offers spectacular views of the mountains around. The elevation at Zero Point is 3660 m. We will walk further up a couple of kilometres and camp in a meadow, the Base Camp. Day 06: Stay over at Base Camp Before gaining more altitude we will spend a day exploring the surrounds at Base Camp.
