The island of Borneo, located north of Australia, is surrounded by the South China Sea to the north and northwest, the Sulu Sea to the northeast, the Celebes Sea and the Makassar Strait to the east and the Java Sea and Karimata Strait to the south. In total it covers an area of approximately 743,330 square kilometres (287,000 sq. miles). Borneo is mountainous and largely covered by dense rainforest and hence much of the terrain is virtually impassable, and large areas are as yet unexplored. The highest point on the island is Mount Kinabalu, at 13,455 ft (4,101 m), located in Sabah.
The many rivers on the island are navigable by small crafts which helps provide access into the interior regions which would otherwise remain unreachable. The coastal areas of Borneo are generally swampy and fringed with mangrove forests. Leading ports on the island include Kuching (Sarawak) and Sandakan (Sabah). Located close to the equator the climate in Borneo is tropical, i.e., hot and humid with average annual rainfall of over 100 in. (254 cm), and a prolonged monsoon (generally from November to May).
Airfare is not included in the tour price.
