Ancient abbeys, delightful churches and Britain’s best book town – this scenic tour of the Black Mountains allows you to see plenty even if your time is limited to one weekend. The circular tour is a great way to explore the eastern fringes of the Brecon Beacons. There is one taxing climb, but daily mileages are low to give you plenty of time for sightseeing, shopping and sampling the local food.
Tour Itinerary: Day 1: Arrive in Hay on Wye Day 2: Hay on Wye to Crickhowell, 25 miles (40 km) The tour begins in Hay on Wye, world-famous for its book shops and literary festival, with a steep climb to reach the spectacular Gospel Pass. Enter the quiet Honddu Valley, where sheep greatly outnumber people, and visit the beautiful chapel at Capel-y-Ffin, the quirky church at Cwmyoy with its leaning spire and the 12th century remains of Llanthony Priory. Once the seat of Augustinian monks, and the site of several violent battles, this is now a tranquil place to stop for a picnic. Then it's down to the Usk Valley to finish in Crickhowell. Day 3: Crickhowell to Brecon, 25 miles (40 km) Visit Crickhowell’s castle before setting off for today’s easier ride to Brecon. Following the Usk Valley, the day offers views of the wonderful Black Mountains without any strenuous climbing. The 14th century court and castle at Tretower and Brecon’s historic buildings provide plenty of interest. Day 4: Brecon to Hay on Wye, 25 miles (40 km) The final day brings you back to Hay on Wye via quiet lanes and pretty villages.
