Take a tour of the central Brecon Beacons on this 3-day circular route from Brecon. As you journey through the National Park, you’ll encounter the former tramways and railways of Wales’ industrial age which now form major parts of the Taff Trail. Thanks to these feats of engineering, the gradients are often gentle. Add to this a well-defined, waymarked path and you’ve got a recipe for a perfect walking break with all the rewards of hillwalking without the challenges of real mountaineering!
Tour Itinerary: Day 1: Arrival in Brecon. Day 2: Brecon to Abercynafon - 12 miles (19 km) The route begins in the Canal Basin in Brecon, following the tranquil Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal, passing colourful barges and flower-filled cottage gardens. Then it's on through the landscape beloved by Henry Vaughan, the 18th Century poet who lived near Talybont-on-Usk. After the village, you climb alongside the Talybont Reservoir, following the route of the old Brecon and Merthyr Railway, which once transported goods through the mountains. Spend the night at the head of the reservoir at Abercynafon. Day 3: Abercynafon to Nant Ddu - 17 miles (27 km) Re-join the path through the forest to reach Torpantau, where the waterfalls are quite spectacular after rainfall. Then it’s on through the forest to the small village of Pontsticill, where you meet the Brecon Mountain Railway. The route now leaves the National Park, joining the Taff Valley. You head south as far as the impressive viaduct at Cefn Coed, then swing north to join the walkers-only branch of the Taff Trail (the cyclists route continues south to Cardiff) which leads through the forest and past the Llwyn Onn reservoir to Nant Ddu. Day 4: Nant Ddu to Brecon – 13 miles (16 km) The mix of forest and reservoir continues as you head towards Storey Arms, the main pass through the central Beacons. The peaks of Pen y Fan, Cribyn and Corn Du, the highest in South Wales, are within a stone’s throw and the views down the valley are fantastic. With all the uphill walking under your belt, you can now enjoy the long and gentle descent towards Brecon following a lovely old coach road, footpaths and minor lanes. Tour summary: - Duration: 3 days hiking - Distance: 42 miles (67 km) Option on Day 2 to reduce mileage - Grading: Moderate. Notes: The price is 235 Pound Sterling (GBP) per person based on 2 people sharing a twin/double room. Contact operator for sole traveller/single occupancy rates.
