This trip is timed to be an ideal addition to a week spent at our private reef island kayak program or as a separate mainland exploration. Spend 6 days and 5 nights splitting your time between a remote cloudforest lodge nestled at the base of coastal mountain peaks wreathed with beautiful cascading falls and the incredible Mayan Ruins site at Copan. You'll get a taste of "real" Honduras complete with all the warmth of its people.

We'll pick you up in San Pedro Sula for the ride to the base of Pico Bonito, rising nearly 8000 ft. straight up from sea level.. This is excellent habitat for nearly 200 species of birds, many feline species including Ocelots and Margays and the magnificent butterfly, the Blue Morpho. Enjoy hikes to incredible cascading waterfalls, swim in the pools below them and perhaps even take a night hike…when the jungle changes shifts and an entirely new world opens up. Cleaving this jungle is the Rio Congrejal whose clear waters tumble down to the sea not far from our lodging giving us an excellent whitewater rafting experience to add to the jungle hiking.

After our time in the jungle, we travel across Honduras via Mini bus to Copan near the Guatemalan border. Here, we'll be able to visit this incredible Ruins site along with the various Museums. One of the cardinal sites of El Mundo Maya, many of Copan's mysteries still lie within active archaeological digs. While in this charming mountain village, we'll also take the opportunity to do some early morning birding and pay a visit to a tropical bird rescue center and coffee plantation. We'll cap off our Copan experience with a sunset dinner at Flavia's old family hacienda overlooking the Copan River, the Ruins and the mountains… all by firelight. You are not going to want to leave.

Tour Itinerary:

Day 1: Arrival. Arrive in La Ceiba by 10 am. Jeep transfer to the jungle lodge for rafting and hiking along the Rio Congrejal and adjacent Vine falls.

Note: You will need to arrive in Honduras the night before. Whether you are coming from San Pedro Sula or Roatan, we'll help you plan to arrive in La Ceiba by 10 am on Day 1.

Day 2: Full day of cloudforest hiking at Pico Bonito National Park, complete with waterfall swims, visits to the butterfly rearing station, the serpentarium and an incredible lunch at Pico Bonito Lodge.

Day 3: Early morning departure for overland trip to Copan with a breakfast stop on the beach. We'll arrive in Copan mid-afternoon for a chance to visit the Mayan museum and a grazing tour of some of the fine local eateries. Overnights in Copan will be at Casa De Café.

Day 4: Day spent at main ruins site and national museum. Lots to see here.

Day 5: Free choice day: tropical bird rescue station, a little time to explore on your own, a trip to the Cigar maker, a trip to a separate ruins site (yes, there are more)… you choose and we'll make it happen. Blissful sunset dinner at Hacienda San Lucas, built on Mayan stone, overlooking the ruins…

Day 6: Early morning birding with Bob, the bird guy on the Guatemalan Border followed by lunch and then minibus shuttle back to San Pedro Sula for next day flights home or on to Roatan for one of our Private Reef Island Kayak programs.
