From May 20-26, our days will be filled with the memorable canvases and frescoes of Venetian artists, entering the visions themselves as we float along a quiet canal, wander a colorful island, or cross a lively campo. On Venice's islands and on Italy's mainland, we'll explore and examine the serenely symmetrical 16th century architecture of Andrea Palladio, tour renowned museums and view an intimate palazzo. We'll delight in superb classical concerts in memorable venues, and sample highlights of local cuisine.

This tour, following M16020's popular pattern, will immerse you in the best of the region's art, tastes, and places of cultural interest.

The tour is scheduled to take full advantage of concerts presented by the Centre de Musique Romantique Francaise, headquartered in the magnificent Palazzetto Bru Zane.

The concerts in Venice are presented at various venues of great historical importance, enabling festivalgoers to appreciate the interiors and the acoustics of some of the most precious and evocative buildings in this splendid city. As well as the intimate salon of the Palazzetto Bru Zane, the Teatro La Fenice, the Scuola Grande di San Rocco and Scuola Grande San Giovanni Evangelista, the Conservatorio di musica Benedetto Marcello and the Basilica dei Frari will all serve as venues for festival events.

Tour Itinerary:

Day 1: Arrival in Venice. We'll await you at an elegantly restored palazzo hotel in Venice in the afternoon. Settle in to our comfortable home-for-the-week. If time allows, we'll enjoy an introductory walk in "our" neighborhood - with views nearly unchanged from those Canaletto canvases of the 17th and 18th centuries. In the evening we'll enjoy a superb dinner (included) - our introduction to the cuisine of northern Italy.

Day 2: Breakfast (all breakfasts are included). Get acquainted stroll in the morning, then we'll view the expansive Grand Canal views from atop the tower of the Palladian Church of San Giorgio Maggiore. After an abundant lunch at a welcoming trattoria (included), take time to relax or explore on your own. In the majestic Basilica dei Frari, with its glorious Assumption by Titian, we'll enjoy our first Venice concert.

Day 3: Today we'll explore the lagoon islands, stopping in the colorful islet of Burano - a photo-op at every turn - and calm green Torcello, a now nearly uninhabited island that was the earliest center of civilization in the Venetian lagoon. Dinner (included) this evening is at a warm and welcoming trattoria renowned for its vegetarian dishes, but with plenty of choices for any diner.

Day 4: A day with Palladio - today we'll visit three of the villas designed by Renaissance Architect Andrea Palladio: Villa Foscari (also known as La Malcontenta) beside the Brenta Canal, Villa Cornaro/Gable, said to be the first model Jefferson used for Monticello, and Villa Barbaro, with its exquisite Veronese frescoes. We'll stop in the enchanting hilltop village of Asolo for lunch (included) in a local restaurant where we will enjoy delicious regional cuisine and local wines. We'll return to Venice in time to prepare for an evening concert at Scuola Grande San Giovanni Evangelista, one of Venice's oldest religious confraternities.

Day 5: We'll spend this morning in the Gallerie dell'Accademia, with its unsurpassed collection of Venetian Renaissance art. After a free afternoon to enjoy as you please,we'll depart for the Palazzetto Bru Zane. We'll glide through the canals on gondolas, arriving at the palazzetto in time for a private tour before a 5:00 concert. We'll stop for dinner (included) as we walk back to our hotel.

Day 6: Today we'll share some of our favorite hidden corners of Venice, stopping to visit artisans who continue to pass on the ancient crafts of the city, and enjoying lunch (included) at a typically Venetian bistro. Later in the day, take time to explore Venice on your own or relish a quiet evening.

Day 7: There is much more to see and experience in Venice - we leave this day open for you to do as you please - a museum? shopping? a visit to another lagoon island? Enjoy! We'll meet to enjoy a delicious farewell dinner (included) before our final concert at Palazzetto Bru Zane.

Day 8: Breakfast, then arrivederci to new-found friends before departing on your journey homeward.
