Northern Kwazulu Natal has arguably the greatest diversity of habitats in South Africa. These include open bushveld, coastal dune forests, lakes, rivers, mangrove forests, subtropical marsh-lands and a magnificent coastline with endless, in some areas completely deserted, sandy beaches. The animals found here range from the ƒ®Big Fiveƒ to the scarce nyala and the tiny suni with prolific bird life. Hluhluwe/Umfolosi Park is not only the oldest reserve in Africa, but also the place where the white rhino was saved from extinction. Today the park is the third largest in South Africa and the only reserve where you are virtually ensured of good rhino sightings.
These tours are designed for the person who do not have much time, but would like to experience a part of the untamed African wilderness. Tour Itinerary: Day 1: We travel north through sugar cane fields towards the subtropical coast and bushveld of Zululand. We visit a Zulu village for a cultural experience. We visit the Sangoma (a diviner also erroneously called the ƒ®Witch doctorƒ) and treated to some authentic tribal dancing. After lunch we depart for Hluhluwe/Umfolosi Park where our close encounter with the African wildlife begins. Then we travel to a private game reserve for more excitement. We search for the game in an open vehicle from late afternoon into the evening using powerful spotlights to find the elusive nocturnal animals. We return late evening, after an unforgettable experience, for a well-deserved rest meal under the stars in the boma and then retire to your luxury room. Includes: (D). Day 2: After an early rise and another game drive in an open vehicle, we have a sumptuous brunch and some optional activities can be done such as game viewing on horseback, boat ride on the Mzinene river or a walk through the reserve etc. Alternatively your guide can take you to the nearby Hluhluwe Umfolosi reserve for another game viewing experience. This afternoon and evening we do another open vehicle game drive in the reserve. Includes: (B), (D). Day 3: After an game drive and breakfast we leave the reserve for a boat cruise on the famous Lake St Lucia, a natural paradise around which five complete ecosystems exist with an abundance of bird life, hippo and crocodiles.
