Day 1, Wednesday, Oct 19th: (-/-/d) Today we all arrive and gather at the beautiful and historic Asilomar Retreat center at 5:00 pm. The Arts & Crafts architecture you see below was originally designed by noted architect Julia Morgan in 1912 and her wood and stone designs are a masterpiece (speaking about creativity!). We’ll check in, get settled in our rooms and meet in the common room of our own historic building to meet and greet! Dinner is from 6:00-7:00pm and afterward we’ll go over the general structure for our next days together, talk about your personal workshop goals and get to know each other. After our gathering might be the perfect time to walk along the mysterious Asilomar beach!
We need a good nights sleep so we’re ready for the unforgettable experience awaiting us in the Monterey Peninsula! With cypress trees, rugged shores, and crescent shaped bays, Monterey will take your breath away. Pacific Grove is so peaceful it attracts the Monarch butterflies each year as they migrate for winter. Carmel-by-the-Sea is a tiny romantic town with beautiful beaches, shops, art galleries and restaurants. Monterey also has a world class Aquarium, and is home to the famous Cannery Row. Pebble beach is a beautiful destination in its own right with it’s famous golf course and 17 mile drive – considered one of the most scenic coastal roads in the world! Even whale watching is available.
Days 2-4, Oct 20-22nd: (b/l/d) We’ll spend the next 3 days exploring the coastal landscape, the small sea side towns, and places of interest along the way. Each morning we’ll start our day with breakfast at Asilomar’s Crocker Dining Hall and head out for our morning photo excursion – perhaps to find the famous Cypress tree along the 17 mile scenic drive, or spend the morning at Asilomar’s coastline, Monterey’s Cannery Row, etc.
We’ll bring picnic lunches from Asilomar so we can focus on our photographic process and then the rest of the afternoon will be open for you to continue your work, take a long walk on the beach, or take some time for yourself in town. Our evenings will be spent gathering together in our common room by the fireplace to discuss our day, download our work to the computer and sharing our work with each other. There is no definite schedule for these days, only a basic outline that may be changed as I work with the energy present in the moment.
Day 5, Sunday, Oct 23rd: (b/l/-) We wrap up our workshop and time together at noon. Breakfast in the morning will be followed by a short gathering – then lot’s of hugs and sweet good-by’s. We leave the Monterey Peninsula renewed, refreshed and excited about what we have created and the creative process that will follow!

Important Information for the Monterey Travel Photography Workshop
While on the grounds at Asilomar, there’s plenty of opportunity for contemplative walks through the dunes, breathtaking runs along the beach, or relaxing dips in the heated pool. Asilomar is the perfect environment for personal reflection amid quiet solitude and you will leave here spiritually inspired, rested and more centered. Perhaps it’s simply the energy here that demands we slow down and pull into ourselves.
Things to do! There are so many wonderful things to experience in Monterey and the surrounding area. You will have the opportunity to go out on your own and explore during our free time.
