The summer climbing season for Mt. Fuji begins on July 1 each year and from then until the end of August, the high mountain services are open for business. This is the time most climbers and pilgrims ascend to this lofty summit. We have chosen a date towards late July, to try and avoid the last of the rainy season in early July. On this trek, after leaving Tokyo we will catch a bus up to the half way station on Mt. Fuji. From there we will climb to the summit of this 3775 m mountain over two days, staying in a rock hut for one night. Our aim on summit day is to reach the peak by sunrise so we can share in this must do experience which to most Japanese is a spiritual and life affirming experience.
After a night in a famous mountaineering cabin, we will then use one of the little used old trekking routes to descend to the turquoise waters of Lake Kawaguchi. Along the way we will walk through towering conifer forests, past ancient temples and Inns redolent of early times before finishing at the Sengen shrine, a symbolic gateway whose deities guard Mt. Fuji. From there we will return for a night in Tokyo, where we can explore the bright lights of one of the most vibrant cities in the world. Here we will say goodbye or continue together to walk our Hokkaido Haute Route. Tour Itinerary: Day 1: Meet Tokyo Narita airport or at designated hotel in Tokyo. Transfer to hotel in central Tokyo. Day 2: Bus to Lake Kawaguchi. Store extra luggage and bus to 5th station, our starting point. After briefing, begin walking up this mighty scree covered mountain to about 3000 m where we will stay in a stone Inn for the night. Day 3: 3:00 a.m. breakfast! Sunrise on Mt. Fuji is the goal of our climb so we start early. After resting and spending several hours here we will descend to the 5th station to stay in a famous mountaineering hut. Day 4: Descend through the old conifer forests to the Sengen Shrine and Lake Kawaguchi. Collect our excess baggage and return to Tokyo by bus. For those staying with us we will have a night to explore and experience the tastes and sounds of Tokyo. For those leaving, depart for airport or other travels. Notes: Prices:
