Experience the vibrant city of Las Palmas before heading to the craggy peaks and deep valleys of Gran Canaria's dramatic highlands.
Highlights: - Enjoy vibrant Las Palmas: its historic quarter and Las Canteras Beach - Discover the dramatic highland landscape - See troglodyte caves of Artenara. Tour Itinerary: Day 1: On arrival make your own way to vibrant Las Palmas for your first two nights. Day 2: Free time. Discover at leisure the historic Vegueta area, the tree lined squares and cobbled streets and delightful cafe's and restaurants. Head north to the sweeping beach of Playa de las Canteras. Visit the botanical gardens or take an open top bus around the city. Day 3: After checkout, a taxi will transport you into the central highlands. You will be dropped off in Artenara, the starting point of your first walk. Your baggage will continue in the taxi and be dropped off at the Fonda de la Tea in Tejeda, your hotel for two nights. Artenara, is the highest town in Gran Canaria and famed for its occupied cave houses and the rugged landscape around it. You will enjoy a 4 hour walk from Artenara to Tejeda, taking in the dramatic scenery en-route. Ascents approx 500 m, descents approx. 750 m. Day 4: Today discover the beautiful verdant hills on the Tejeda Circle during this 5 hour walk. The longer walk is well worth it taking in spectacular views over the caldera before descending to the farming village of La Culata, where donkeys are still used to work the farms before descending back to Tejeda. Ascents and descents approx. 800 m. Day 5: Check out of your hotel this morning and take the taxi to the start of your walk today at Cruz de Aserredor. Your baggage will continue to your next hotel, the Las Tirajanas, in San Bartholome where you will spend the next three nights. Enjoy a lovely walk taking the route via Roque Nublo to San Bartolome, approximately 5 hours. Ascents of 500 m and descents of 1,100 m. Day 6: Today enjoy a circular walk around San Bartolome, taking in the beautiful views of Fataga and Santa Lucia valleys. Expect ascents and descents of about 550 m. Day 7: Today is a free day. There's a choice of optional walks or mountain biking. Alternatively, take the bus into Maspalomas (about 20 km away) to visit the famous sand dunes or why not simply relax by the pool or enjoy the spa facilities? Day 8: We transfer you to out of the hills and back to the airport for your return flight home. Walking: Moderate - Good general fitness required. Each of the three walks is planned as a full day, with 4 1/2 - 5 1/2 hours walking included. Take a picnic lunch and lots of water. Walking is generally on Caminos Reales which are well marked, stony paths. Lightweight walking boots are recommended for this terrain and we also suggest you take walking poles.
