Carpathian Oltenia is a beautiful area. Here you will find a fantasy world: gorges carved in limestone, large plateaus, pastures and oak forests, chestnuts and lily. This program will take you through one of the most interesting region in Romania, namely North Oltenia. You’ll get acquainted with the history of famous places in Romania and experience true traditions. With its unique traditional architecture and monasteries, its marvelous landscapes, Oltenia invites you to discover its authentic atmosphere.
Day 1: Bucharest - Pitesti - Slatina - Craiova - Drobeta - Turnu – Severin - Orsova. We will leave early in the morning from Bucharest as we have to travel for 363 km. Our only stop will be at the Iron Gates Museum where we will understand better how the Iron Gates were built, how it was before compared with the current situation, its consequences upon flora and fauna and its advantages upon the industry.
Day 2: Orsova - Danube Gorges - Orsova. We will first go directly to the Danube Gorges in order to admire what nature can build with bare hands. We will take a short cruise in order to visit one of the most impressive areas, the Cazane, where the river outlines its caves and its gorges. We will have lunch in Orsova, in a pleasant atmosphere near the Danube shores. After lunch we have the possibility of a short trip that will lead us to Ciureanu Peak. From here we can admire the entire river crawling through the Gorges. In this way we will have two perspectives of the landscape: one from above and one within the gorge itself.
Day 3: Orsova - Baile Herculane - Baia de Arama - Ponoarele - Targu - Jiu - Parang. The scenery is magnificent and crosses villages that seem detached from another world. Once we enter in the Cerna Valley, the landscape changes completely. Developed on a tectonic fault, the valley is a rare wildness area. Afterwards, we will pass through one of the oldest spa resorts from Europe established by the Roman Empire in 105 BC We will head afterwards towards Ponoare village, a karst area where caves and lakes are connected. We will also discover here the natural bridge called the Bridge of God.
Up on the ridge that separates the natural lake from the bridge, you can find the largest clints field from Romania. These are characteristic landforms for the river that crawled into the limestone, creating some deep grooves looking like rock wounds. Impressed by the beauty of the place we will further on withdraw in a quiet place from Parang Mountains, where we will rest for the night.
Day 4: Parang - Targu - Jiu - Horezu. We will start our day by visiting Targu-Jiu city. Due to the famous stone sculpture of Constantin Brancusi (the Table of Silence, Infinite Column, Kiss Gate), Targu-Jiu has become a reference point in the universal culture. Next, we will visit Horezu Monastery, located in Valcea County, at the foothills of Capatanii Mountains. It is the most representative construction of the Brancovenesc style. A place of worship, build during Constantin Brancoveanu reign, Horezu Monastery is now included in the UNESCO patrimony. After lunch, we will admire the pottery workshops, a millenary tradition which started as a complementary activity and became a work of art. By taking part in their activity we will appreciate more their work and their work of arts.
Day 5: Horezu - Curtea de Arges - Pitesti - Bucharest. On our way towards Curtea de Arges we will stop at Maldaresti Museum where we will discover at the same time the traditional architectural style and some personalities from the Romanian history. Afterwards, we will visit Curtea de Arges Monastery, the most important pilgrimage and prayer place in Arges County. The visitor’s attention will be captured by the mural paintings in oil made by French and Romanian painters. The name of the monastery is strictly connected with the craftsman Manole’s legends. Manole with his team tried to build the monastery, but all that they had built during the day fell apart during the night. In one night, Manole had a dream in which he realized that the construction will resist only if he will build his wife in one of the walls. The rest of the story can be found from the source itself, the Curtea de Arges Monastery. Then, we will head directly to Bucharest.
