Fortified churches can only be found in some parts of Europe, while in Transylvania there have been more than 300 fortified German churches due to the danger represented by possible Turkish and Tartar invasions. Another representative aspect is the mixture of architectural styles. The tourist can observe on the same monument influences ranging from Romanic to Late Gothic styles.

Some of them have disappeared, some are due to disappear, while most of them still exist in remote villages. However, seven of them have had a better fate and have been enlisted on the UNESCO heritage list. We invite you to spend a holiday in the heart of Transylvania, experiencing a place of history, living traditions and fairytale landscapes.

Tour Itinerary:

Day 1: Bucharest – Ploiesti – Brasov – Harman (visit the fortified church) – Prejmer (visit the fortified church) – Biertan (medieval theater – accommodation in a guest house). We will leave from Bucharest to Brasov, where we will take some time to visit the historical center. The city of Brasov is one of the oldest and largest cities in Transylvania, and in the past it was one of the most important commercial centers in Romania. We will then depart for Harman, a fortified church that dates back to the year 1240. It is one of the best preserved churches from that period, with three concentric fortified walls, defense towers and other particular elements, being a great example to visit, especially if you want to understand the history of this place.

Our next stop will be at Prejmer, another fortified church enlisted on the UNESCO patrimony list, which withstood the Ottoman invasions. Its impressive fortifications were needed because it was the first that had to face the Ottoman armies that came in Transylvania through Buzau Pass. After this visit we will head to Biertan, where we will spend our night in a boarding house. After dinner we will enjoy a medieval play with knights and princesses that will come to fulfill this medieval day.

Day 2: Biertan – Copsa Mare (visit the fortified church) – Valchid (visit the fortified church) – Laslea – Malancrav (visit the fortified church and have lunch at a local sheepfold) – Biertan. After breakfast we will depart with our cars and a map, to find other fortified churches, smaller in size, but with a very important role in the history of this area: Copsa Mare, Valchid, Malancrav.

In Malancrav, we will leave our cars and go on a short hiking that will lead us to a traditional sheepfold, where a local sheepherder will show us how cheese is made, in the same way that it is was made centuries ago. After this, we will have a traditional lunch in a charming orchard. We will then return to our boarding house, and before dinner we will organize an entertaining TreasureHunt game, in the Biertan Fortress.

Day 3: Biertan – Richis (visit the fortified church) – Nemsa (visit the fortified church) – Medias (visit the town) – Sighisoara (visit the town) – Brasov - Bucharest. We will leave for Bucharest after breakfast, and visit two of the largest and most well kept medieval cities in our country: Medias and Sighisoara. Our first stop will be in Medias, an old city that illustrates the multi ethnic relationship in this area (Romanians, Hungarians and German settlers).

The historic center of this city has a certain charm, with winding narrow streets that converge to the large center square and the ruins of the old fortifications. After this, we will head to Sighisoara, a very well preserved and fascinating medieval fortress, and the only one in Romania which is still inhabited. Here, before departing to Bucharest, we will take some time to visit the fortress and have a traditional lunch in a local restaurant.
