You cycle in the infinite widths of the Hungarian lowlands. You can also visit the famous “Arabian National Stud“ in Babolna where you can explore the secrets of traditional horse breeding. The Basilica in Esztergom is the greatest church in Hungary and accommodates many art treasures. Enjoy the friendly people and the Hungarian hospitality. The tour is mostly flat, sometimes lightly hilly. The Austrian section is on well equipped bike paths, in Hungary you will bike on country roads and side roads. Entering and exiting the cities, there is some traffic to be careful of!
Cycling in Slovakia. Helmets are obligatory for adults out of cities. Children under 15 years must wear a helmet in Slovakia all the time. At night or in poor visibility cyclists must have some reflectors on their clothes or must wear safety vest. You are strongly advised to bring your own helmet! Helmet rental is possible if reserved at the time of booking the tour for an charge of EUR 15 (payable locally). Safety vests are provided free of charge.
Day 1: Vienna. Independent arrival to Vienna. The magic of this lively city will delight you.
Day 2: Vienna - Bad Deutsch Altenburg/surroundings (approximately 46 km/29 miles). The Danube-Cycle-Path leads you on quiet trails through the "Donauauen" National park, passing the castles of Orth and Eckartsau until you reach the former Roman city Petronell Carnuntum (Roman excavations) or the health resort Bad Deutsch Altenburg.
Day 3: Bad Deutsch Altenburg/surroundings – Bratislava – Mosonmagyarovar/Halaszi (approximately 61 km/38 miles). You follow the Danube-Cycle-Path to Bratislava – the capital of Slovakia. The quaint old city center with numerous sights, a lovely pedestrian zone and countless restaurants and coffee shops will invite you to an extended stroll. After you have visited Bratislava, you cycle to the "Little Alföld" which will surely enchant you. This stage can be split, by adding an extra night in Bratislava.
Day 4: Mosonmagyarovar, Halaszi - Györ (approximately 45 km/26 miles). Today, you will bike through the charming and idyllic landscape of the “Little Alföld” to Györ, one of the most important cities of the Hungarian lowlands with a glamorous, historical city center. For a pleasant walk, the narrow lanes, churches and the palaces of the baroque city center are very inviting.
Day 5: Györ - Tata (approximately 61 km/38 miles). Through a landscape of rolling hills you will cycle to the town of Tata with its lakes, located at the foot of the hill range “Gerecse”. Don’t forget to visit the Arabian National Stud in Babolna, this is a historical place of culture.
Day 6: Tata – Esztergom, Sturovo (approximately 55 km/34 miles). You cycle to the hilly „Gerecse“ mountains, through the lush forests. If you prefer to take it easy: take the train (approximately 20 km/12 miles – not included). You reach the divided city of Komarom (a boarder-town between Hungary and Slovakia). Along the Slovakian Danube you bike through small farm-villages in a flat region to Esztergom, where you can admire the impressive cathedral.
Day 7: Esztergum, Sturovo - Szentendre - Budapest (approximately 58 km/36 miles). Steep mountain-slopes frame the picturesque landscape of the Danube Bend up to Szentendre island. You can learn more about the Hungarian architecture in the nearby open air museum. Go by bike or boat to Budapest (boat ride to Budapest not included) On the boat, the view on the sun deck is overwhelming.
Day 8: Budapest. Enjoy this day in the metropolis of Budapest. Individual departure or extra nights. All distances are “approximately distances” based on the recommended cycle route. You should pack good rain clothing (jacket and trousers), sun hat and sun protection as well as sports shoes.
